Glasgow to Glencoe, Scotland

There are lots of childhood memories for me in this part of Scotland. Driving past Loch Lomond provides incredible views. It’s nice to take a trip to Inveraray Castle, or head up to the Rest and Be Thankful viewpoint at the top of the A83, and see the spot where I raced in 1961 at the start of my career.

Lahaina to Hana, Maui, Hawaii

I once owned a house on Maui, and enjoyed driving from Lahaina to Hana. Hana is very wet, so it’s green and fertile. The winding roads remind me of Scotland. George Harrison had a house near me – he was a keen horticulturalist, so the climate and conditions couldn’t have been better for him.

Car of choice: Volkswagen beach buggy 

Round trip in the Scottish Highlands

This shows you the beauty of northern Scotland. Drive up the A9 to Thurso at the tip of the British Isles. Look out across the North Sea to your right and the Atlantic Ocean to your left. Return via the dramatic west coast and stop off – en route to Fort William – in Strathcarron at one of my favourite restaurants, Applecross Walled Garden.

Isle of Mull, Scotland

Take the ferry to the Isle of Mull and drive around – it’s flat but beautiful. One of my favourite spots is Iona Abbey, just off Mull on the Isle of Iona. On my birthday a group of us went there, including opera singer Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. She broke into song inside the abbey, and we were all in tears.

Car of choice: Range Rover 

San Francisco to Pebble Beach, USA

Ancient redwoods and ocean views line this route in California. I took the trip in my son’s Ferrari and we played golf at Pebble Beach and Cypress Point before spending time in the beautiful town of Monterey. From there continue down Route 1, along the cliff-top roads and up to Big Sur.
