When it comes to finding a decent airport restaurant, we’ve gone from famine to feast. Now the challenge in many terminals is choosing not just what to eat, but where. Harriet Baskas from stuckattheairport.com suggests one of these tasty options next time you’re passing through
Barcelona-El Prat Airport, Terminal 1
It is not unknown for passengers to make a special effort to arrive early at Barcelona-El Prat Airport, just to be sure they have time to sample the innovative Catalan dishes served up at Porta Gaig, a welcoming outpost of chef Charles Gaig’s eponymous Michelin-starred restaurant in the centre of Barcelona. Find it on the pre-security side of the departures hall.
London Heathrow, Terminal 5
Nab a window table overlooking the runway at Gordon Ramsay’s Plane Food and you’ll soon be wishing your flight was delayed. The menu covers all the meals of the day, from eggs Benedict and pancakes to sausage and mash and cocktails. They will even prepare a takeaway picnic if you find you’re short of time.
Chicago O’Hare, International Terminal 5
Nine fresh dining options (plus a gourmet chocolate shop) swept into Chicago during a recent makeover of International Terminal 5. Among the highlights is an eat-in location for much-lauded chef Rick Bayless’s Tortas Frontera, which serves Mexican specialities with many locally sourced ingredients (smaller branches in Terminals 1 and 3).
Umami LAX’s ahi tuna burger
Los Angeles International
Speciality burger bar Umami Lax is just one of a number of great offerings at the recently revitalised Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX. The menu will have even burger aficionados stumped. Intriguing options include an ahi tuna burger (pictured) with crushed avocado and wasabi flakes.
Boston Logan Airport
You’ll find lobster, fried clams and Boston clam chowder at multiple branches of Legal Sea Foods at Boston airport. In Terminal E, the pre-security Dine Boston Restaurant and Grill has a New England-centric menu. As a bonus, your restaurant receipt gives you access to the priority line at the security checkpoint.
Marinated sliced goose at Hung’s, Hong Kong International T2
Hong Kong International, Terminal 2
Line up with the locals at Hung’s Delicacies in the pre-security area of Terminal 2. Don’t mistake it for just any fast-food joint: the menu is evocative of Ah-Hung’s unpretentious Michelin-starred bistro in town and includes signature dishes such as marinated goose slices (pictured) and duck tongues in Chinese liquor.
