A word with… Tom Daley

Tom Daley burst onto the British diving scene as a 13-year-old winning the European 10-metre platform Gold medal in 2008. Two years later he was World Champion and then collected a Bronze at the London 2012 Olympics. Now a seasoned world traveller, Tom shares his love of Barcelona, ideas about living in LA and reveals his favourite London restaurant

Where have you visited that you’d consider setting up home?
I love America, and LA in particular. The weather’s usually pretty good, the food’s great and the people are really friendly. I stay at the W Hotel and try to spend time at Soho House – it’s a great place to chill out with friends in the evening.

Favourite restaurant?
I’m a big fan of Inamo in London’s Soho. I love sushi and it’s a bit different; there’s an interactive menu – you order at your table and the food just arrives.

Where’s next on your travel list?
I have a break from training so I’m off to America to relax. It’s the last break I’ll have before Rio 2016 so I’m going to make the most of it. I’m heading to Florida with friends. I’m a big fan of theme parks so we’ll go to Aquatica and Busch Gardens. I’m particularly looking forward to riding the Falcon’s Fury roller coaster.

Do you have a favourite city?
I love Barcelona. The backdrop at the diving pool (pictured below) is incredible. You’re up on a hill, so the views from the boards are amazing. The food’s tasty too.

Which country do you love returning to?
New Zealand. There are so many extreme sports to do there and it’s incredibly beautiful – it’s impossible to take a bad photo.

Have you ever had a holiday disaster?
In 2010, the British diving team became stranded in Mexico after the Icelandic volcano erupted. We were due to fly home for the third leg of the Fina Diving World Series, but in the end we held the competition in Mexico because no one could get to the UK.

Roma

What’s one of your favourite memories from your trips abroad to compete?
Winning the World Championships in Rome (above) in 2009. I was 15 and not expecting to come away as world champion. I think I celebrated with a gelato.
