Seven summer beauty tricks

Whether you’re basking on a beach in Barbados or jet-setting to Miami, beauty editor Karena Callen shares her top beauty picks that will help you look sharp when the mercury rises

Chanel Inimitable Waterproof Mascara

While I’m not an advocate of a full face of make-up by the pool, I definitely won’t hit the sun lounger with bare lashes. A coat or two of mascara takes me from undone to dressed in seconds. With a ‘won’t-let-you-down-in-the waves’ waterproof formulation, Inimitable (£26) boosts volume, lengthens and curls lashes. Go for rich brown rather than black – it’s less harsh in strong sunlight.

Lipstick Queen Mornin’ Sunshine Lipstick

I don’t usually fall in love with novelty products, but I’m completely besotted with lipstick guru Poppy King’s new colour-transforming lipstick in Mornin’ Sunshine (£18, available on board – see High Life Shop magazine). This chameleon lip-enhancer changes colour when applied, reacting with your skin’s natural pH to create a shade that’s unique to you. The shade you achieve will depend on the acidity or alkalinity of your skin.

Frances Prescott Tri-Balm

I never leave home without this multi-tasking balm, (£39) which cleanses, exfoliates and moisturises in one. Totally travel-proof, the twist-up stick is a perfect fit for handbag or carry-on luggage. Emulsifying beeswax melts away sunscreen, while the English oil blend soothes parched skin and pumpkin enzymes gently exfoliate. Leave on overnight for an intensive post-sunbathing treat or as a hydrating mask during a flight. Top tip: for extra cooling comfort, chill your Tri-Balm in the fridge before use.

Clarins Eau Dynamisante Natural Spray

Not all fragrances can be worn in the sun (some ingredients can be photo-sensitising), but my all-time favourite mood booster Eau Dynamisante (from £45) can be safely spritzed on from top-to-toe without risk of sensitivity. With toning, revitalising and moisturising botanical extracts, including ginseng, aloe and rosemary, teamed with deliciously scented petit grain and patchouli, it’s the perfect pick-me-up in (and out of) the heat.

Skinceuticals Phloretin CF Serum

To keep skin super-safe in the summer, apply an antioxidant serum (£150) before your SPF. It helps neutralise the free-radical damage caused by UVA exposure, and the serum’s secret weapon is high-potency Vitamin C, proven to shield skin from environmental damage and UV rays. It’s an investment buy, but a little goes a long way.

Emma Hardie Plump and Glow Hydrating Facial Mist

If your skin is feeling dehydrated – or getting over-heated – reach for Plump & Glow (£36). Instantly cooling, a couple of spritzes of this mist minimises redness and mattifies skin to reduce shine. Super-charged with skin-plumping hyaluronic acid, it’s also excellent for freshening make-up throughout the day.

Lancaster Sun Sport Cooling Invisible Body Mist SPF30

I’m a fan of sun protection that can be spritzed on and doesn’t feel sticky or leave a white residue. Lancaster’s latest Body Mist (£25) sunscreen is, quite simply, genius. Not only is it totally invisible, it also cools skin on contact – and can be sprayed onto wet skin. Brilliant if you don’t have a towel to hand or are chasing your children on the beach.
