St Kitts: five island highlights

From the lime-green shine of its mossy mountains to the glass-clear turquoise of those oh-so surfable waves, there’s adventure in the air in St Kitts. For those not content to spend their holiday basking in the island’s dreamy heat, we’ve found the cultural experiences hotting things up away from the beach

French Colonial poise, ocean views and 2.5 acres of lush, botanical garden: nothing says you’re in the Caribbean like 18th century Fairview Great House. Inside, things only get more island-inspired as you embark on a delicious tasting of the Caribbean’s liquid delicacy – rich, moreish rum. You’ll get the chance to try several different flavours and learn about the drink’s intriguing legacy, all in the house kitchen, featuring original volcanic stone and an authentic brick oven. This is also where, iced tea in hand, you can enjoy Fairview’s exciting culinary workshop, and watch as some of the region’s loveliest recipes come to life before your eyes.

For an authentic foodie paradise, St Kitts is the Caribbean's gastromic go-to. First head down to Fari Organic Farm for the much-loved Ital Creations food truck and home of St Kitts finest vegetarian and vegan offerings. Grab a portion of banana pancakes or a taco-bowl to take away, and eat it under one of the nearby mango trees. Elsewhere, The Kitchen at Belle Mont Farm serves up a seasonal, 'farm-to-table' dinner from the heart of their 400-acre organic farm; an ever-changing menu concept to be enjoyed alongside fellow foodie travellers. Last but not least, Sprat Net on Old Road, a wooden structure across the glorious beachfont, where you can tuck into the kitchen's daily catch, grilled to perfection.

If you’ve followed your heart all the way to St Kitts, it’s time to follow your inner-artist to Sasha, the island’s wine-loving artist extraordinaire. Paint & Sip with Sasha, The Artist is a two-hour ride of Caribbean creativity, where art and wine go hand-in-hand. You’ll paint your own souvenir in the sociable surrounds of the Creole Restaurant and Bar (where you can nibble on coconut-crusted shrimp and hot wings) and mingle with fellow wannabe artists getting in touch with their creative side. The best part? You can take your creation with you and boast your new skills to those back home.

Another island matriarch looking to show you St Kitts' adventurous side is Annie, with her wonderful walking tours. Having worked in the tourism industry for over three decades, Annie knows a thing or two about the best ways to explore the island she calls home, starting with her award-winning full island tour. Here you’ll glimpse all of St Kitts’ major attractions in one compact three-hour outing. Fancy the road less travelled? Her Rainforest Tour will take you through trickling waterfalls, remote plantations and playful monkeys, either on foot or on the back of a well-mannered horse – the choice is yours.

Harness up, don’t look down, and set sail through the skies as you embark on one of Sky Safari’s dizzying zip lining tours through the St Kitts rainforest. The guys at Sky Safari will collect you from your hotel, before delivering you to a height some 250ft above sea level where the island’s most incredible views, including the historic UNESCO site, Brimstone Hill Fort, are sprawled out before you. If you’re feeling jittery, the tour’s fun-loving, witty guides are on hand to make you feel at ease.
