The Avios: how many do you need?

A flight to Dubai requires 50,000 Avios + £100 when booking a Reward Flight Saver for an off-peak return, travelling in World Traveller.1 Recent changes mean you can also redeem Avios on hotels and car hire or use them as part-payment on holidays with British Airways Holidays.2 This means you can book a stay at The Address Beach Resort and swim in the world’s tallest infinity pool.

As well as covering hotels, car hire and flights, Avios can also be spent on experiences such as the unmissable Ferrari World Abu Dhabi (an hour’s drive away from downtown Dubai).3

Step one: Barclays Avios Rewards

Barclays Premier Banking4 is the only UK current account that effortlessly collects Avios for you. Joining Barclays Premier Banking is free (for qualifying customers) and lets you enjoy a range of exclusive rewards and benefits. Once you’re a Premier Banking customer, you can opt in to Barclays Avios Rewards5 for just £12 a month to start collecting 1,500 Avios per month. There is even an anniversary reward every 12 months – a choice of either an additional 7,000 Avios or a cabin upgrade voucher.6

As for bonuses, new Barclays customers who complete a full switch using the Current Account Switch Service within three months will get a 25,000 Avios joining bonus7 in their account. Or, if you have been with Barclays for four months or more, it will be a tidy 2,500 Avios for you. (Eligibility, conditions and a £12 monthly fee apply.)

Step two: buy at Bicester Village

As a British Airways Executive Club Member, shopping at the luxury outlet Bicester Village usually gets you five Avios for every £4 spent, but until 31 August you’ll be able to enjoy triple Avios on your purchases – that’s 15 Avios for every £4 spent.8 Sitting in the Oxfordshire countryside, just a short trip by road or rail from London, the Village is home to renowned brands including Mulberry, Off-White™, ZEGNA and more – all offering remarkable year-round savings on the original retail price. Plus, explore a superb selection of restaurants, cafés and pop-ups such as Cecconi’s, La Tua Pasta, farmshop restaurant & cafe, Shan Shui and Ladurée.

Step three: mini-break your way to a maxi-break

Booking flights and hotel stays are just some of the ways to collect Avios. But, while you’re saving them for that trip to Dubai, it’s worth knowing that Avios can be collected on mini-breaks right here in the UK, too. Airbnb has more than six million places to stay, from low-key UK weekend stays in country cabins and seaside cottages to apartments, villas, condos and even castles, scattered across the globe. Best of all, you’ll collect three Avios for every £1 you spend.9

Step four: arrive in style

Already have a trip booked? Treat yourself to valet parking and lounge access to collect additional Avios. Pre-booking valet parking at a range of global airports, including London Heathrow, collects five Avios for every £1 spent (costs start at approximately £100 for a week’s parking on-peak).10 While purchasing a lounge pass for access to non-British Airways airport lounges across the globe – no matter what airline you are flying with or cabin you are travelling in – will be rewarded with five Avios for every £1 spent.11

Reward Flights
1. Reward Flight Savers are British Airways’ best value reward flights. Reward Flight Saver offers customers great value flights with a low, flat fee to cover taxes, fees and carrier charges and a fixed Avios amount. To be eligible for Reward Flight Saver, you need to have collected at least one Avios in the past 12 months. To find out more about Reward Flight Saver,  click here. 2. Members can use their Avios to pay for part of the total price of selected holidays (Flight + Hotel or Flight + Car) when making a non-redemption booking on ba.com for travel on British Airways operated and selected British Airways codeshare partner operated flights. Bookings made with this payment option will be subject to the standard fare rules associated with the holiday purchased.  Avios can be used to pay for bookings made on ba.com or by calling a British Airways Contact Centre. The entire booking must be eligible for Avios part payment for it to be applied to the booking. Standard British Airways Holidays terms and conditions apply.

Barclays Premier Banking
4. Join Premier Banking by opening a Premier Current Account. You also need a gross annual income of at least £75,000 paid into the account, or a total balance of at least £100,000 in savings with Barclays, in Barclays UK investments, or in a mix of savings and investments.

5. You can opt in to Barclays Avios Rewards if you’re a Premier Banking customer or have a personal Wealth current account with Barclays – you’ll need to register for the Barclays app and have a British Airways Executive Club account too. There’s a £12 monthly fee and you have to opt out of Barclays Blue Rewards and go paperless for all your accounts and services with Barclays. To access Barclays Avios Rewards in the Barclays app, you need to be over 18. You can join Premier Banking if you have an income of £75,000 or £100,000 to save or invest with Barclays.

6. You will qualify for the Anniversary Reward after you’ve held Barclays Avios Rewards for 12 months and paid 12 monthly fees. You will need to choose your anniversary rewards in the Barclays app by no later than one month before your anniversary, otherwise the cabin upgrade voucher will be automatically selected for you. Cabin upgrade vouchers must be used on Avios reward flight bookings. Reward flights and cabin upgrades are subject to availability. Taxes, fees and carrier charges per person apply. Additional Terms and Conditions apply to the use of the cabin upgrade voucher.

7. To qualify for the 25,000 Avios joining bonus, you’ll need to join Barclays Avios Rewards within three months of opening your first Barclays current account. Then, you’ll need to complete a full switch of your old current account to Barclays, using the Current Account Switch Service, within three months of joining Barclays Avios Rewards.
