5. Great Ocean Road, Australia

There’s no better way to spend a long weekend in Victoria than a leisurely drive along the Great Ocean Road from Torquay to Port Fairy. Enjoy the views leading to Port Campbell and look out for the ‘Twelve Apostles’ rock formations. Finish with a celebratory beer at one of Port Fairy’s craft breweries.

4. Te Anau to Milford Sound, New Zealand

This journey through the stunning Fiordland National Park is unmissable. Drive on a crisp, clear day for views of glaciers, springs, waterfalls and snowy mountains. Stop for photos at Mirror Lakes where, on a calm day, the mountains will be perfectly reflected in the still water.

3. Cape Town to Cape Point, South Africa

With deep blue waters on one side and red rock on the other, the Cape Peninsula is breathtaking. Schedule time for stop-offs: stretch your legs on Buffels Bay Beach or try whale watching at False Bay. Seasoned drivers recommend tackling the route in a clockwise direction, to avoid getting stuck behind tour buses. Finish by watching the sunset in Camps Bay.

2. Sorrento to Ravello, Italy

The clifftop coastal route, with its narrow stretches and hairpin turns, isn’t for the faint-hearted. But worth it for the views of the sea, lush countryside and colourful villages. You can drive the whole Amalfi Coast in about three hours, but it’s more fun to stop off for a gelato.
