CELEBRITY CONCIERGE • December 2016
The Spandau Ballet frontman is the patron saint of relaxed travel. From indulging in sci-fi movies during a flight to marvelling at Machu Picchu, here’s what makes him happiest when he’s on the road
What kind of traveller are you?
Mostly laidback, but I like to make sure I have my own things with me, especially when I’m performing. Being tall, I can’t simply walk into a shop in Barcelona or Rome and buy a suit to wear on stage. When it comes to the actual travelling experience, I love boarding a flight, having a glass of wine and watching a good film without being interrupted by my phone. I enjoy the latest science fiction releases – my wife, Ali won’t normally watch them with me.
Do you prefer to travel solo or with friends and family?
I rarely travel solo. Often I’m with my tour manager, which is great as I don’t have to think about anything – I just get told when and where I have to be in order not to miss my flight. Travelling with my family is fun, but the airport experience is more traumatic. Young children don’t understand the need to get anywhere quickly.
What’s been your most adventurous holiday?
I’ve done a few charity treks for Action Medical Research, which were awesome. I tackled the Costa Rican jungle in 2008 and climbed Machu Picchu in Peru in 2003. The views blew me away.
What are your favourite bits of a holiday?
Splashing around with my children in the pool or sea, and finding great restaurants.
Cliveden House holds special memories for Tony
Where in the world is your favourite hotel?
Cliveden House in Berkshire. You may know it as the home of the Profumo affair, but it’s also where Ali and I got married in 2009 – so it’s very special to me.
And your favourite restaurant?
Ramon’s in Port d’Alcudia, Mallorca. It’s owned by my friend Pepé, and serves the world’s best tapas.
What’s your must-pack holiday item?
Hairspray.
Which destinations are on your bucket list?
India, Iceland and China. Despite all the touring I’ve done during my career, I’ve never visited them – but I’d love to.
Where next?
I’m going to Venice for some shows with my band. I still get a thrill from a great gig in a fabulous location.
