A helmet is one of the most crucial items in your wintersports wardrobe, providing invaluable protection against falls and crashes. A well-fitting helmet is key for comfort and efficiency, making Salomon’s Custom Air Fit system one of the best options on the market: the inner liner inflates around your head to create a bespoke fit. The Ranger also features Salomon’s EPS 4D moulding solution to protect your head by dispersing and absorbing shock, and an Advancedskin liner for warmth and wicking.
The Salomon Ranger C. Air helmet (men’s and women’s), from £110
The new Iceland jacket from Picture Organic Clothing ticks all the boxes: it’s environmentally friendly, technical, and stylish enough to wear on and off the slopes. As with all Picture Organic kit, it’s made from 100% recycled polyester, but the innovative Iceland jacket is crafted from knitted rather than woven fabric, offering the wearer unprecedented freedom of movement. Other handy touches include a removable powder skirt, waterproof zippers and higher fabric density on the shoulders to prevent abrasion from a backpack.
The Picture Organic Clothing Iceland jacket, from £440
The perfect pair of wintersports trousers delivers reliable weather protection, warmth without bulk (and vents for warm days) and unrestricted movement. Scott’s Ultimate Dryo 20 pants offer all that and more with four-way stretch fabric, taped seams, adjustable waist fastenings and gaiters, articulated knees and abrasion-resistant cuffs. The flattering slim-fit trousers are available in a range of colours.

Investing in a technical base layer will keep you warm, dry and itch-free all day long. Cornish brand Finisterre crafts its classic men’s and women’s Eddy base layer from a blend of sustainably sourced, super-fine Merino wool (for breathable and naturally antibacterial warmth) and polyamide (for durability and shape retention). Thanks to Merino wool’s natural wicking and thermoregulating properties, the Eddy keeps you warm when temperatures plummet, but also prevents overheating when you’re skiing hard.
The Finisterre Eddy, from £50
Falke, which has been crafting socks since 1895, knows that cold, uncomfortable feet ruin a ski day. Its SK collection ranges from SK1 (a thick, merino wool blend for occasional skiers seeking maximum warmth and comfort) to SK5 (a slim-fitting, silk-blend sock for maximum performance). All-rounders will find SK4 to be a winning combination of warmth, cushioning and moisture wicking.
Falke SK socks range from £25-£49
Dragon Alliance’s new NFX2 goggles promise to deliver clear, uninterrupted vision in all conditions. The brand’s pioneering, colour-optimised Lumalens technology provides ultra-high-definition optics, with improved colour, definition and depth perception across the spectrum of light conditions. The large frameless lens gives full peripheral vision, while the Swiftlock lens change system means you can effortlessly swap lenses to match conditions (each pair comes with two lenses).
Dragon Alliance NFX2 goggles, from £149.95
The new unisex moufla glove from Chamonix-based brand Black Crows combines the warmth of a mitten with the precision of a glove: an internal glove enables you to grasp your ski poles easily, while the goatskin outer mitten keeps hands dry and warm. Neoprene cuffs prevent snow sneaking in, detachable wrist straps keep the gloves safe, and maximum movement is achieved through the use of a pleat construction method.
Black Crows unisex moufla gloves, from €129.95
Statistics show that using an airbag system (ABS) rucksack can increase your chances of survival in an avalanche, making it a viable investment for dedicated freeriders. Arc’teryx’s new Voltair airbag system is powered by a rechargeable battery, enabling multiple deployment, as opposed to traditional ABS systems that require cylinders to be refilled after each use. The battery is removable (ideal for airline travel). The 20- and 30-litre Voltair bags feature a mechanical trigger for deployment, which can be locked into ‘off’ position during travel and lift rides; internal pockets and a waterproof sleeve; watertight zippers; a ski/board strap, and adjustable waist and sternum straps.
The Arc’teryx Voltair 20l, from £870, excluding battery, £270, and charger, £40
