December 2024
You can do a lot with your Avios, including give them away. Here’s how (and why) you should gift and transfer Avios to your travel-mad loved ones this December
Do you have a wannabe (or verified) jetsetter among your friends or family? Then Avios is one of the most versatile gifts you can give them this Christmas – especially if you’ve left it to the last minute.
Not only is it quick and easy to do, but gifting amounts start from just £49. Any Avios you gift will be credited to your recipient’s account (although you can select a specific gift delivery date, should you wish) and can be spent on anything they desire. This includes, as with all Avios, flights and upgrades, hotel stays, car hire and even cases of wine. Plus, Avios won’t expire as long as there’s some activity on their Executive Club account. So, whether you’re spending Avios or collecting more through one of the following ingenious ways, it really is the gift that keeps on giving.
Not only can you buy Avios to gift directly, you can also transfer your own – if you’re feeling generous. You can transfer up to 60,000 (in one go), and up to 200,000 of your Avios in one year. As for the small print, there’s a £50 fee to make a transfer, but it is free for Gold Members.
If your lucky giftee – or indeed, you – are wondering how to spend this Christmas Avios surprise, here are just a few ways to get you going…
Save on flights and upgrades
Your Executive Club wanderluster can spend their festive Avios on flights and upgrades in the New Year. They can be spent on seats in any class, to any destination served by us or by our oneworld® alliance and IAG partner airlines. For selected flights, they can be spent on Reward Flight seats, which start from £1 plus 18,500 Avios for return flights to Europe.1 Alternatively, they can book a regular Reward Flight with Avios and a fixed cash amount to cover any taxes, fees and carrier charges. Don’t forget, Avios giftees can also upgrade a booking with Avios,2 and that applies to both existing and new bookings. They simply need to go to ‘Manage your bookings’.
Get discounts on holidays
Whether they’re booking a straight flight or a package break through British Airways Holidays, they’ll be able to reduce the amount they pay by using Avios part payment. The discount can be applied to both flights plus car hire, or flights plus accommodation bookings. USA road trip, anyone?
Avios can also be spent on hotels around the world, including with brands such as Marriott, IHG and Hilton. With more than 300,000 properties to choose from, they’re bound to find something suitable. They can pay for their entire stay using Avios, or part pay to save.
Similarly, they can book and pay for their hire car with Avios, whether that’s the whole rental or just a part of it. We’ve partnered with Avis and Budget to offer hire cars in more than 8,000 locations, including, of course, the airports we fly into.
Booking experiences
One of the lesser-known uses for Avios is experiences. Any lucky recipient of Avios can use them to pay for, or get a discount on, everything from walking tours to attraction tickets in the UK and abroad. It’s the perfect way to enrich their next trip or save on weekend fun.
Buying a case of wine, or two
If giftees are looking for something different, they should check out The Wine Flyer. They can collect and spend their Avios on the site and it will get them up to 95% off everything from cases of wine to whisky, gin and other spirits – perfect for entertaining or simply enjoying at home. And if they spend more than £100, there’s free delivery, too. Now that’s a Christmas or New Year present worth having.
To gift Avios this Christmas, simply head to our dedicated page and log in to your Executive Club account to see your options. You’ll need the recipient’s Executive Club account number and email address, too. Or if you’ve built up a big nest egg, you can transfer your Avios instead – there’s a £50 fee for each transfer (this is waived for Gold Members).
Terms & conditions
1. The price referenced is for a Reward Flight and based on an off-peak, return fare for 1 passenger travelling in Euro Traveller from London Heathrow to selected European destinations. All prices and Avios amounts quoted are correct as of 25 November 2025. Reward Flights are available to any Executive Club Members with an Avios balance. In addition to your Avios, the only cash amount required for Reward Flights is a fixed cash amount. Your chosen date of travel will determine whether you pay a peak or off-peak Avios amount. When booking Reward Flights, you can choose all peak dates, all off-peak dates or a mixture of the two. For travel in First, a cash amount to cover taxes, fees and carrier charges will be payable. The taxes, fees and carrier charges will vary dependent on airline and destination and will be calculated when you book your flights. The final fee (i.e. Avios plus payable taxes, fees and carrier charges) will be displayed at the final stage of your booking. Find out more about Reward Flights here. Executive Club Terms and Conditions and Conditions of Use apply.
2. An Avios upgrade is always to the next cabin, which can vary depending on the route and airline. On a short-haul flight, you could upgrade from economy (Euro Traveller) to business (Club Europe). On a long-haul flight, you could upgrade from economy (World Traveller) to premium economy (World Traveller Plus); premium economy (World Traveller Plus) to business (Club World), or business (Club World) to First. We offer a limited number of Reward seats on all our published flights and so they are subject to availability. There must be Reward Flight availability in the next cabin for you to be able to upgrade to it using Avios. Most cash bookings can be upgraded with Avios either at the time of booking or later on, depending on availability. Only the lowest economy (World Traveller) fares (Q, O and G) cannot be upgraded with Avios at any time. You won’t be able to upgrade with Avios at the airport or on board.
