Vila Madalena: Brazil’s hottest fashion district

There’s no denying Sao Paulo is Brazil’s fashion capital. Global brands and big-name local designers congregate in the city’s malls and the upscale Jardins district. But to discover young local talent and new labels, head to west side neighbourhood Vila Madalena. This one-time hippy hub has the best independent boutiques, according to fashion writer Helen Jennings – here are ten she thinks are worth scoping out

Chapeau
1

Chapeu

Rio doesn’t have the monopoly on beachwear, thanks to Chapeu. This Paulista brand makes saucy, sporty pieces for the city’s work-hard, surf-harder girl. Bikinis, swimsuits, totes and shirts are all splashed with bold geometric prints.

2

Flavia Aranha

This ethical designer uses organic cotton, linen, silk and natural dyes to create timeless pieces that draw on Brazilian craftsmanship – think simple, geometric lines in pastel shades. Tilapia leather bags and blown-glass jewellery complete each look.

3

A La Garconne

A La Garconne is an antique shop selling retro denim, T-shirts, raincoats and sunglasses alongside tapestry cushions, leather couches and oddities such as puppets and jousting helmets.

4

Fernanda Yamamoto

Architectural lines, origami detailing and rich colours set Fernanda Yamamoto’s womenswear apart. The Brazilian-born Japanese designer stocks her collections alongside emerging talent in her gallery-like store – and was one of the first to open in the area.

Uma
5

UMA

Raquel and Roberto Davidowicz draw on hi-tech textiles and sportswear influences for their womenswear brand UMA. SS15’s trompe l’œil denim prints and heavy chains jazz up the loose silhouettes on sale in UMA’s minimalist store (above).

6

Brecho Vo Judith

Brecho Vo Judith takes thrifting to new heights. Dig deep in this treasure trove to discover vintage Hermes scarves, Fendi handbags and Prada shoes as well as second-hand pieces by Brazilian designers.

7

Sou Sou

Satya Spindel specialises in handcrafted jewellery using indigenous stones. Dreamcatcher earrings, pendant necklaces and art deco cuffs are displayed on antlers on the walls of her Sou Sou showroom.

Simultanea
8

Simultanea

Bohemian shoppers flock to Tana Millan’s bright white space (above) to pick up summer dresses and statement accessories in every colour. Hothouse prints and hand embroideries are Simultanea signatures.

9

Luiza Perea

Luiza Perea’s shoes are as stylish as they are comfortable. Strappy flats, peep-toe pumps, mid-heel booties and bridal sandals are made from local leathers, often with metallic finishes.

10

Seal Brazil

For surfer dudes, it’s all about Seal Brazil. Inside its boxy wooden facade, the store sells simple sweats, shorts, shirts and trainers.
