Iceland
As seen in… Fortitude
With its icy fjords, dramatic glaciers and isolated fishing villages, Iceland is the ideal stand-in for the fictional Norwegian Arctic world around which thrilling TV series Fortitude is based. The sweeping frozen landscapes in this noir drama – starring Sofie Gråbøl, Ken Stott and Dennis Quaid – are actually in the eastern Fjardabyggd region, while the remote settlement of Reyðarfjörður doubles up as the tiny mining town of Fortitude. It’s desolate, cold, but oh so visually arresting. Fortitude returns Thursdays from 26 January 2017, 9pm exclusively on Sky Atlantic.
New York
As seen in… Billions
Award-winning actors Paul Giamatti and Damian Lewis shine in Billions, a gripping American TV series set in New York City, about US Attorney Charles ‘Chuck’ Rhoades (Giamatti) and his long-running legal battles with ruthless hedge fund manager Bobby ‘Axe’ Axelrod (Lewis). The show captures all the buzz, magnetism and exhilaration of the Big Apple, where the drama unfolds from the Upper West Side in Manhattan to Chelsea and the Hamptons, as these two powerful men from opposing worlds are locked in an epic battle of egos. The second series begins on 21 February 2017.
California
As seen in… Big Little Lies
Brand new drama mini series Big Little Lies airs in March, starring Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon. Based on the book of the same name by Liane Moriarty, it’s about three mothers of first-graders at the fictional Otter Bay Elementary School whose seemingly perfect lives slowly unravel, with devastating consequences. The story may turn dark, but expect plenty of shots of the sunny Californian coast, where the story is based. Eagle-eye viewers will spot Big Sur, Pacific Grove and Monterey Bay, including its famous aquarium – a must-do if you visit the area.
Croatia
As seen in… Game of Thrones
As Game of Thrones devotees will know, the epic fantasy drama series is part-filmed in Croatia. The walled old town of Dubrovnik – with its 16th-century stone buildings, tiny winding lanes and medieval fortress of Bokar – doubles up perfectly for King’s Landing. Also seen on screen are the island of Lokrum, aka Qarth, Trsteno Arboretum, the setting of the Red Keep gardens, and the ruins of Diocletian’s Palace in Split, where Daenerys Targaryen resides. All these sites are open to the public, so you can walk in the footsteps of these fictional characters while soaking up the ancient history.
