For globetrotters seeking some winter sun, Bahrain is poised to become a cultural epicentre of the Middle East. Visitors often start their voyage of discovery at the Bahrain National Museum, where much of the country’s rich, cultural history is on show, including archaeological artefacts dating back millenia. For history fans, the Qal’at al-Bahrain fort is another must see. It is one of the kingdom's UNESCO World Heritage Sites and dates back over 5000 years to the ancient Dilmun civilisation. Throughout its history, the country has seen its fair share of milestones, most recently as the first destination in the Middle East to host the F1. Now, it’s quickly becoming a destination for travellers seeking authenticity, sophistication and hospitality in the region.

For a once in a lifetime opportunity, why not try pearl diving? Historically Bahrain was the centre of the world’s pearl trade, with local pearls considered among the best in the world. Today head to Bahrain’s Muhurraq island to explore The Pearling Trail – a UNESCO World Heritage site that includes 17 listed buildings and three oyster beds. You can wander these old houses and palaces in Muhurraq or explore the treasures in Bahrain’s turquoise waters for yourself - any pearls you do find are yours to keep forever.

Festivals are a huge part of Bahrain's cultural calendar, which includes events such as the Spring of Culture, the Sea Festival and the Jewellery Arabia Festival. Foodies should take a tour of the traditional Manama Souq, breathing in the spiced aromas or trying the traditional sweets. Then head to Block 338, also known as the dining district, featuring go-to spots such as The Foundry and the award-winning Café Lilou. Block 338 is also home to Al Riwaq Gallery, where some of the best art from Bahrain’s burgeoning creative scene is housed.

Much of Bahrain’s indigenous wildlife is protected in sanctuaries and parks where you can find local species of anteloupe, gazelles and camels. Plan a visit to the Al Areen Wildlife Park for a peek at the Arabian leopards, wolves and lynx before heading to the Falcon Clinic, where the region’s most prized birds of prey receive special medical treatment. When out and about, try spotting any of the 330 varieties of bird found soaring in the skies or, closer to the ground, the 21 species of butterfly.
