March is prime time for travellers looking to start celebrating winter’s end and explore some of the world’s most flamboyant cities in their sleepy, pre-summer bliss. Clued in on where’s hotting up next month, destination expert Alicia Miller takes us on a spring break
If it’s sunshine-licked, sultry climes you’re after, look no further than Miami this March. It’s one of the year’s driest months here, which means beach perfection with minimal tropical downpours. You could easily lose whole days loafing on stripey loungers at Miami Beach – but better still to cast your net wider, taking in glam, mimosa-soaked alfresco brunches by the rainbow-hued Art Deco buildings of South Beach, or kayaking through lush mangroves in North Miami.
Dream flight: Take BA0207 from Heathrow at 08:50 on Friday, and arrive into Miami at 14:45.
Aurora-seekers heading north often swarm the capital in winter, but many don’t realise it’s still possible to catch the natural phenomenon come March. Don’t rush off from this Scandi city too quickly, though – in spring, Oslo offers a blissfully low-key vibe. The sleepier season brings affordable flights and hotels, and it’s atmospherically cool enough to enjoy fresh pastries in cosy cafés – yet sunny enough to wander the Old Town, complete with medieval fortress.
Dream flight: Take BA0768 from Heathrow at 16:10 on Friday, and arrive into Oslo at 19:30.
This chi-chi northern Californian city has a lot more going for it than just its Silicon Valley status. One of the state’s biggest hubs, it’s packed with urban fun – tech and computer museums, shopping on tree-lined Santana Row, killer restaurants – but it’s also tantalisingly close to the great outdoors. Take advantage of the fine weather to hike in Castle Rock State Park, or marvel at ancient redwood trees at Big Basin. Or make it a two-for-one city break: you’re less than an hour’s drive from San Francisco, after all.
Dream flight: Take BA0279 from Heathrow at 12:50 on Friday, and arrive into San Jose at 16:55.
Fiery tango, juicy steaks, ornate opera houses – the sexy Argentine capital sizzles year-round. But in March, so do the climes, and with highs hovering at a perfect 26°C days are never too sweaty and nights never too nippy. Spend evenings chattering over smoky meats and Malbec at a parrilla grill restaurant, soak up vibrant street art at El Caminito, and explore the city’s elaborate cemeteries, taking in the final resting place of Eva Perón.
Dream flight: Take BA0245 from Heathrow at 22:10 on Friday, and arrive into Buenos Aires at 09:05 on Saturday.
It’s almost always sun-drenched in Malta – the island receives around 3,000 hours of rays a year – but March is prime visiting time, when it’s neither too hot nor too busy. Your to-do list is blissfully simple: eat lunch in the sun at Marsaxlokk fishing village, watching colourful fishing boats bob as you munch grilled sea bass; explore the sleepy cobbled streets of Mdina, the honey-hued old capital; or hop over to sister island Comino for a dip in the famed Blue Lagoon – Mediterranean waters don’t get much more Insta-worthy than this.
Dream flight: Take BA2644 from Gatwick at 08:05 on Friday, and arrive into Malta at 12:15.
It may still be sweater weather in Marseille in March – average highs are around 14°C – but you’re not here to lie on a beach. This bustling port city has plenty to keep you busy for a long weekend. Wander its market-studded Vieux Port and historical Le Panier quarter, then explore the rugged islands nearby, perfect for a cheek-reddening hike before you return to base to devour a steaming bowl of the city’s signature seafood stew, bouillabaisse.
Dream flight: Take BA0370 from Heathrow at 16:30 on Friday, and arrive into Marseille at 19:25.
