If you only do one thing
Take the ten-minute Star Ferry ride from Kowloon to Hong Kong Island. It costs something like 50p and it’s spectacular. You can see all the colonial British buildings as well as the new skyscrapers. Sunrise and sunset are great times to cross. Once there, check out Stanley Market – packed with well-priced souvenirs – and nearby Stanley Beach, where there’s always a holiday spirit.
The high-octane hike
Tackle the highest peak in the city, Tai Mo Shan (957m). It’s an adventure – uneven stone steps take you uphill for two hours, so water and good shoes are musts. But once you’ve reached the top, it’s like some paradise Caribbean island. If that sounds like a bit much, try Lantau Peak (aka Phoenix Mountain), the second highest summit, with easier paths, or Cheung Chau Island, which offers cool cafés and gentle hiking.
Where to eat dim sum
City Hall’s Maxim’s Palace has been a classic since it opened in 1980. The women who work here still wheel the food out to your table on retro trolleys so you can see what’s on offer before ordering (try the xiao long and char siu baos). Arrive early to avoid queuing.

The neighbourhood to know
Once a traditional fishing community, Jamestown is now like the Hackney of Accra. It’s my favourite place to brunch. Rosé Garden is an excellent spot, as is Jamestown Coffee Company and Vine, which has some of the nicest outdoor tables.
If you only do one thing
With its swaying palm trees and flashy mansions, Aburi is known as the ‘Hollywood Hills of Ghana’. There are loads of cultural things you can do on a day trip there. Or hire a quad bike and explore the mountains. If you’re short on time, Legon Botanical Gardens in the university grounds is a beautiful and peaceful alternative.
Where to get your hangover cure
Start with carby, comforting waakye before buying fruit at Makola Market and a takeaway burger from Burger Boyz. Then go and recover on the beach. You’ll normally find me at Alora Beach Resort or Sandbox Beach Club, but there are lots to choose from. And Labadi, Coco and Laboma beaches are all lovely.

The street food stop
I love papri chaat (crispy papdi crackers served with different toppings) and stuffed aloo tikka (spicy fried potato) at Vaishno Chat Bhandar in Kamla Nagar – one of the oldest chaat vendors in the city. Moolchand Parantha’s flatbread at Lajpat Nagar market and daulat ki chaat (a chilled, sweet dessert) at Chandni Chowk market come a close second.
Where to find bliss
Head north from Delhi out towards the hills and watch the landscape morph into the greenest green. Stay at Aloha on the Ganges – a spa resort in Rishikesh – where you can attend meditation sessions in the morning and witness the fiery Ganga Aarti ceremony by night.
If you only do one thing
Make it a trip to the Akshardham Temple – an architectural marvel and spectacular blend of traditional culture and spirituality. A stroll in the complex makes for an incredible experience – look out for the ornate wall carvings and look up to take in the grandeur.

The best bites
I recommend Pōda in Ksamil and Lost Seaside in Sarandë for their Mediterranean-Balkan menus. There’s seafood linguine and paella, but if you fancy a local delicacy, try byrek, a flaky pastry savoury pie, or aubergine stuffed with vegetables. The restaurants have private beach cabanas and cocktails, so you could spend days at them.
Where to stay
King Hotel is in the heart of Ksamil. You can book a pleasantly affordable room with a private balcony overlooking the beach and the Ionian Sea. You could also stay in the nearby port town of Sarandë, where vibrant restaurants line its promenade.
The road trip
The Blue Eye, near the village of Muzinë, is a short drive from Ksamil. It’s a natural spring that bubbles up from an underground cave, creating a stunning blue pool you can swim in. They don’t call Ksamil the ‘Maldives of Europe’ for nothing!

The place to be
On Friday nights, it’s Oistins Fish Fry – a year- round street party and local institution. Patrons include Rohan Marley – Bob Marley’s son – who I met there recently. Get a scoop of rum and raisin ice cream from the red stall.
For all the family
Drive inland for a visit to Harrison’s Cave Eco-Adventure Park or embark on a magical underwater experience with Atlantis Submarines in Bridgetown. It runs brilliant daytime and nighttime tours.
Where to stay
It has to be the famous Sandy Lane Hotel, where all year round you’re likely to spot a celebrity or two. Enjoy your five-star breakfast with the local paper, The Nation.
