Five unlikely epic drives: Felix Rosenqvist

One of racing’s brightest young talents, 27-year-old Swede Felix Rosenqvist has achieved back-to-back wins in the iconic Macau Grand Prix, as well as several championship titles, including the prestigious FIA Formula 3. All set to join the IndyCar Series for 2019, Felix takes time out to talk to The Club’s motorsport expert, Rebecca Banks, about his top five drives.

B144, Tarangire National Park to Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, Africa

Oodnadatta Track, Australia

This is a 620km, full-gravel outback track in South Australia, so it’s basically off-roading. One of the world’s most isolated places, it’s home to rugged landscapes and salt lakes. There are only a handful of villages along the route and you can go two hours without seeing a building. My friend and I managed to get a puncture about half way down the road in 45-degree heat and had to nurse the campervan at 5mph to the next village. You could say it was an outback adventure!

E10, Leknes to Å, Norway

This is in Lofoten, in the very north of Norway. You pass fjords, beautiful bridges and really cool little towns. In the summer you get very nice weather, but in the winter it’s Arctic-like. Driving here during sunrise and sunset is a great experience, especially when the Northern Lights comes out to play. The roads are nice and twisty through the mountains, opening up to spectacular views.

B144, Tarangire National Park to Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, Africa

These national parks are full with wildlife, wherever you look. It’s an African landscape with red dirt and many mountains, and then half way up the road you reach the Ngorongoro Crater, a spectacular imploded volcano. The resulting ash has made the soil rich for plant life, which in turn brings the animals. It’s a protected area so the elephants, rhinos and other wildlife are safe. In the Serengeti, I was lucky enough to see the migration of wildebeest. It’s breathtaking, stretching as far as the eye can see across the horizon.

N379-1, Serra da Arrábida, Portugal

I drove along this beautiful coast road a few years ago and it has really stuck in my memory. It’s a pretty aggressive landscape with steep mountains, which you might not associate with Portugal. You’re driving on a road that is a couple of hundred metres above the sea, but the ocean is right next to you. The colour of the water is beautiful and then you can see white beaches, sand banks and greenery. The roads are twisty and fun to drive.

The area around this coastal road to Bandol, which takes you through traditional French towns, is famous for producing great wine. Stay clear of the highway in order to lap up the ocean views, which are beautiful and interrupted only by mountains and vineyards. In autumn it’s awash with gorgeous colours and has glorious weather. The roads are packed with sweeping bends and it’s close to my home in Monaco so, luckily, I can go whenever I like.
