Cambridge to Knockhill, UK

“The longest journey I’ve done in an electric vehicle is Cambridge to Knockhill race circuit in Scotland, in a first-generation BMW i3. The other drivers couldn’t believe I’d driven there, let alone in an electric car. It’s mainly motorway until you reach Edinburgh. From there the road crosses the Firth of Forth, passing by the iconic Forth Bridge before you arrive at the circuit, on a hill in a beautiful setting. I wanted the challenge of doing the journey in an electric car and, although I stopped to charge a few times, it was a great experience.”

Sandilands, UK to Spa, Belgium

“I recently drove around 440 miles from my home in Sandilands in Lincolnshire to Spa-Francorchamps race circuit in Belgium for the World Endurance Championship. As well as stunning British countryside, the route passes cities such as Bruges, Ghent and Brussels before dropping down into the Ardennes forest, where the circuit is. I don’t often do road trips, but I thought it would be quicker to drive rather than fly, so I took my own car, an Audi RS5. Despite enjoying the journey there, it wasn’t a good race for me so I took it easier on the way back.”

Stevenage, UK to Stuttgart, Germany

“A while back, when I was racing for Mercedes, I had to change my car so I decided to pick it up from the Stuttgart HQ in Germany and drive it home, all within a day. A friend and I set off at 02:00 from Stevenage in Hertfordshire and by the time we arrived in Belgium it was still dark. We made it to Stuttgart in the afternoon, where I switched the car for a new C63 AMG and drove back. There was a lot of motorway but parts of Belgium were beautiful, despite the fact that it rained a lot!”

London, UK to Spa, Belgium to Monza, Italy

“Some years ago, I drove to two races I had coming up. The first was in Spa, Belgium and the second in Monza, Italy. From London I crossed the Channel and drove through Belgium to Spa. And from there I dropped down to Strasbourg for the night before crossing the Swiss Alps and onto Lake Como in Italy. The car was perfect for the narrow, twisting roads that skirt the lake. Then it was a short distance to the Monza circuit, just outside Milan. An amazing trip, and a much-needed break from flying to every race.”

Salt Lake City to Boulder, USA

Says who: Oliver Turvey
“One of my best friends lives in Salt Lake City, so we did a road trip across the Rocky Mountains to Boulder, Colorado. Along the way we stopped at Arches National Park, where the landscape changed dramatically, with towering rock features emerging from the desert. Back on the road, we headed into the mountains. We were driving up there late at night and it started snowing, which was interesting! Eventually we made it to Boulder, where we stayed for a few nights before driving all the way back again.”
