Platinum Qantas Frequent Flyer

As a Platinum Qantas Frequent Flyer, Hany Messieh is part of the oneworld loyalty programme. He talks about the benefits of the alliance, flying with BA in the northern hemisphere and where he’d spend his Perfect Day

When did you join the Qantas loyalty scheme?
In 1992 I was travelling a lot as a consultant, so I thought I should sign up. I’m a Platinum Member now, which is Emerald in oneworld. I really appreciate the fast-track access through the airport and being able to use the first-class lounges.

What are the benefits for you of Qantas being in the oneworld alliance?
Australia is a long way from anywhere, so being part of an alliance that has global coverage is useful as you move through other parts of the world. You can also make connections easily – they are generally in the same terminal.

How often do you fly BA?
I’ve been based in Glasgow for the past five years, so I fly BA as much here in the UK as I do Qantas when I’m in Australia. We’ve used the opportunity to travel more in the northern hemisphere – we spent Christmas in New York, visited Istanbul this year and are heading to Athens at the weekend.

What has been your most memorable trip?
I have two. The first was being bumped up to first class and flying out over Melbourne on a sunny winter’s day. That was my first ‘wow’ moment when travelling. The second was in Istanbul. We stayed in the old city and there is so much history around there – it’s a magical place where east meets west.

Where do you always return to?
I love New York, because it’s a city that goes and goes and goes. No matter what time of year you visit it has its own character. I also love Hong Kong because it’s noisy, bustling and has wonderful food: it stimulates all of your senses.

Describe your Perfect Day
I would love to visit Mauritius. I hear it has a wonderful climate and a great ocean location. I would follow that with a trip down to Cape Town and South Africa.

What are your recommendations for your hometown, Melbourne?
Spend a day walking through the Laneways enjoying the cafés, outdoor scene and coffee culture. That’s the heart of Melbourne.
