Best of British: the After Hours Club guide to UK eating

To celebrate the Best of British theme at this month’s After Hours Club event, we asked the producers appearing at the event about their favourite British places to eat, stay and play

Gin

It’s a gin thing: juniper berries

Oscar Camargo, business development manager, William Grant & Sons Ltd

Favourite weekend foodie destination
It has to be Scotland to tour the Scotch whisky distilleries and indulge in the finest Angus steaks and freshest salmon.

Favourite place to stay in the UK
The Goodwood Hotel has the most glorious woodland for long walks, especially when you take a stroll past the Farm Shop to pick up some sarnies and local ale. The bar and restaurants in the hotel also serve great, locally sourced delights, and have a lovely relaxed atmosphere.

Best British food market
You can’t keep me away from Neal’s Yard Dairy in Londons Covent Garden with their amazing range of cheese. And I’ll always drop into The Whisky Exchange at Vinopolis to see what’s new in the world of whisky.

Severn

Hot stuff: the Severn & Wye smokehouse

Richard Cook
, managing director, Severn & Wye Smokery

Favourite weekend foodie destination
I have two young boys, so my wife and I like to hitch our small boat to the back of the car and head for the coast. We know Pembrokeshire quite well: it’s hard to beat days spent fishing with the boys for our supper followed by a beach BBQ.

Best British food market
The nearest, with the best array of local producers, is the Stroud Farmers Market. The organisers ensure that there’s always some sort of street entertainment on hand, which adds to the atmosphere.

Bucket list restaurant
Michelin-starred Scottish chef Martin Wishart has always been a great supporter of ours, and I feel guilty we haven’t yet visited him at Cameron House on the banks of Loch Lomond. I’ve heard so much about the setting and the food, so I will have to knock that one off soon.

TasteTradition

Green and pleasant: Taste Tradition have farms in North Yorkshire

James Wright, director, Taste Tradition

Favourite weekend foodie destination
Last year, we sponsored Meatopia London, which was fun. Great chefs from around the world gathered at London’s Tobacco Dock to showcase their best. There were no gas or electric cookers – just wood, charcoal, fire and lots of meat. We tried lots of different dishes, including Wagyu beef and Argentinean Quail with paprika butter.

Favourite place to stay in the UK
Northcote Manor near Blackburn, Lancashire is the best of the best. Jointly owned by Chef Nigel Howath and Craig Bancroft, the attention to detail is amazing. The food, wine knowledge and warm welcome make it thoroughly recommended.

The best British food market
Any one which offers British charcuterie, like Brixton Village Market. Charcuterie in this country has come a long way in recent years. Our artisan producers can now give our continental cousins a run for their money.

Turnips

Top this: turnips at Borough Market

Fred Foster, director, Turnips Distributing

Best British food market
Borough Market in London. It’s a unique opportunity to experience not only what the UK has to offer, but European treats as well.

Favourite UK restaurant
The Waterside Inn, Bray. I appreciate their attention to detail and the mix of European passion and UK produce.

Bucket list restaurant
Rules in Covent Garden is the oldest British restaurant [established in 1798]. I used to park my lorry outside it every day, on my way to Old Covent Garden Market in the late 1970s – but I’ve never actually been inside to eat.

Lolas

Let them eat cake: Lola’s Cupcakes

Asher Budwig, operations director, Lola's Cupcakes

Favourite UK restaurant
I admire how brave Ottolenghi has been with their deli store in Islington, London. The layout is quirky, the food is packed with exciting ingredients, and the way they display it is fantastic.

Favourite place to stay in the UK
Babington House in Somerset. It’s a country house in beautiful surroundings, and you can do some great local walks in the area. You also get to pass through Bath on the way there, which is always worth a stopover.

Bucket list restaurant
Ceviche in Londons Old Street. The setting is very smart, as its on the former site of the Alexander Trust Dining Rooms. The food looks amazing, too.

Buchanans

The big cheese: Buchanans cheese shop

Rhuaridh Buchanan, founder, Buchanans Cheesemonger

Favourite weekend foodie destination
I love the Lake District. There’s nothing like a good day in the fells to work up an appetite, before getting stuck in to some local goodies. Martin Gott of Cartmel Cheeses makes a beautiful St James cheese. I also love the food and atmosphere at The Pheasant Inn at Basinthwaite.

Favourite place to stay in the UK
I had a great stay at Limewood Hotel in the New Forest recently. Every detail was looked after without it being too fussy or stuffy. The food was as outstanding as you would expect from Angela Hartnett and Luke Holder.

Favourite UK restaurant
My favourite local eatery is Verden in Clapton, East London. They have a massive focus on cheese, charcuterie and wine. It’s really relaxed and there’s always something new on the menu. Further afield, you can’t beat the remote charm of The Three Chimneys on the north coast of Skye. The seafood is straight out of the sea and onto the plate.

Laithwaites

Feeling vine: Laithwaite’s Wine

Justin Howard-Sneyd, global wine director, Laithwaite’s Wine

Favourite weekend foodie destination
Brighton is really starting to stand out as a foodie mecca, so I’d probably choose a weekend when the Brighton Food Festival was on, and make a booking at Michael Bremner’s 64 degrees. I’d drink copious quantities of English Sparkling Wine from Ridgeview while staying at the Hotel du Vin. If my favourite Brighton band, British Sea Power, were playing one of their Krankenhaus club nights, my joy would be complete.

Favourite London restaurant
As my wife is half Italian, the restaurant we return to again and again is Enoteca in Putney, run by the lovely Giuseppe Turi and his team. They serve authentic Italian food, beautifully presented, and wonderfully cooked. Plus, they have a thrilling wine list stuffed with delicious Italian wines, both well-known and hard-to-find.

Bucket list restaurant
We live just down the road from Petersham Nurseries, but never managed to eat there while Skye Gyngell was in charge. So top of my bucket list is her new restaurant – Spring – in Somerset House. The reviews have praised her to the skies, so the next special occasion we have, we’ll be celebrating there!
