A word with... Jamie Cullum

The Club caught up with the jazz singer and songwriter to talk festivals, romantic breaks and trying something new

Which destination has inspired your music?
America and New Orleans. Jazz, blues, the music of African Americans – it’s where my heart lies.

Which venue would you love to perform at?
Red Rocks, Colorado – an outdoor venue that looks like it belongs on the moon. A rite of passage for any artist.

Is there a destination where the music scene has blown you away?
I was in Addis Ababa for a while and already had an interest in Ethiopia’s music, but experiencing it first hand was incredible.

Where was your last holiday?
The Maldives. It’s the closest to paradise I’ve ever been. The colour of the water, the sunsets – there are things I thought I’d seen before, until I saw them in the Maldives.

Which hotel has astonished you and what did you love most about it?
The St Regis in Bali is luxurious and well appointed in every way, but also very beachy and relaxed. It’s hard to get that combination right, but they nail it.

And the most romantic place?
Big Sur in California at the Post Ranch Inn. The wildness of the coastline makes you feel connected to the universe. Being with your loved one and watching the sun go down there reminds you of life’s important things.

Which destination has impressed you?
I played a show in Iceland a few years ago. It felt like it still had a strong identity. Creative people, beautiful landscapes, a hint of craziness and a real sense of peace.

Which international festivals do you rate?
My favourite is Japan’s Fuji Rock Festival. It has the hallmarks of the greatest festivals, coupled with that unique Japanese vibe – the detail, quirks, fashion and craziness – combined with a sense of order and care for your fellow man. I got lost there for a couple of days, which culminated in a trip up a mountain to see a secret show with a Japanese punk band. Amazing.

Where next?
I’m heading to Batumi in Georgia to play the Black Sea Festival. One of the great things about touring is checking out festivals you might not usually go to. That’s a good tip, actually – if you like festivals, go to some outside the UK too. Not only can you see great line-ups, but you can soak up the sunshine too.

The Larmer Tree Festival takes place between 13 and 17 July at the Victorian Gardens in Cranborne Chase, Wiltshire.
