Five ways to enjoy a luxury break in Cape Town

Whether you’re sitting down to an extravagant high tea, or embarking on a guided foraging expedition in the wilderness, Table Bay Hotel is the ideal place for a decadent Cape Town experience

Explore the waterfront

Opened by Nelson Mandela in May 1997, Table Bay Hotel has always felt emblematic of modern-day Cape Town. Its position on the historic Victoria & Alfred waterfront means you’re just a short stroll from the myriad attractions in the area; either take a seat at an intimate live music performance or embark on a magical helicopter tour of the coast. The hotel’s position also provides views of Cape Town, both over the ocean and inland towards the iconic Table Mountain.

Tea

Time for tea

Retreat to the lounge for high tea, available every afternoon from 2pm. Choose from savoury snacks including house-smoked and cured ostrich and fresh Franschhoek trout, before moving on to sweet dishes such as chocolate-chip rock buns and baked rainbow cheesecake. Enjoy artisanal teas from TWG Tea, or add some Captain’s Table sparkling wine if you’re feeling extra indulgent.

Wilderness
3

Head into the wilderness

Once you’ve had your fill of tea and cakes, try something new and embark on a foraging course with the hotel’s resident hunter-gatherer, Charles Standing. He’s an adventurer who has spent decades building an intimate knowledge of Cape Town’s wild surrounds. Following your expedition, you’ll be invited into the kitchen for a masterclass on how to prepare your natural plunder.

Winelands

Get tasting

Venture out of the city for the day and put your senses to the test by embarking on a tour of the vineyards that cover the glorious region of Cape Town’s Winelands. The mountainous landscapes and Cape Dutch architecture give an entirely new perspective on the area. The regions of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek provide ideal grape-growing conditions, while visits to vineyards such as Villiera or La Motte will allow you to sample some of the best wine South Africa has to offer.

Waves
5

Watch the waves

No trip to Cape Town would be complete without catching a glimpse of the incredible marine life that lives just off shore. The Table Bay Hotel organises regular tours to the town of Hermanus, one of the best places in the world for land-based whale watching. Listen out for the famous Hermanus whale crier for the latest whale-watching news, so you can find out which of the 37 different species of whale (everything from humpback whales to southern right whales) might be appearing on the day.
