The foodie’s guide to eating in the Caribbean

Queen of contemporary Caribbean cooking, and host of our next After Hours Club dinner, Shivi Ramoutar shares her favourite places to eat on the rum islands

St Kitts

Hit the Reggae Beach Bar on Cockleshell Bay on a Friday for the famous bonfire-lit Lobster Fest. The crustaceans are freshly brought in from the sea and you can choose exactly which one you want. Sipping a cocktail while your heels are dug into the sand is just blissful.

The Club is delighted to be partnering with St Kitts for the next After Hours Club event. An ambassador will be available to answer any questions you might have about the island.

Trinidad

This is my birth country, and I could wax lyrical about the phenomenal array of flavoursome dishes it boasts. In the evening, head to Ariapita Avenue in the capital, Port-of-Spain, for a vast selection of delicious street food, including my favourites: doubles, a ridiculously tasty curried chickpea sandwich, and a filling corn soup. Burn off those calories with a bar/nightclub crawl up the avenue.

Fuzzy-headed from the night before? Hit Maracas Bay, stopping by the lookout point to sample Trini-style ‘confectionery’ – think preserved red mango and sour and sweet tamarind balls. Oh, and remember to take in the picture-perfect vistas. Save space for a bake and shark sandwich from a beach shack (pictured) – I dare you to pile on as many condiments as you can (there are at least 10).

Tobago

Head to the painted food stalls at Store Bay and order one of Tobago’s signature dishes, curry crab and dumplings. The crab is cooked in the shell in a rich curry sauce and served with flat dumplings. There aren’t any fancy plates so you’re bound to get your hands sticky, but you can always dip your fingers in the nearby sea afterwards.

Antigua

Head to English Harbour just before lunchtime and you can’t miss the sunshine-coloured hut of Grace Before Meals. Grab a chicken roti and a bottle of beer before hitting a beach. Don’t go too late, or you may miss out.

Barbados

There’s only one place to go on a Friday night – Oistins Fish Fry (above). Make sure you’re hungry and get there early, because it gets crowded. It’s as much about the bustling atmosphere, arts and crafts and live entertainment as it is about the food. Sample the flying fish or barbecued meats, then shake it all off on the dance floor.

St Lucia

For a vibrant assault on the senses, take a trip to Castries Market (pictured above) in the capital. A rainbow of tropical fruit and vegetables will be on display, while for the more adventurous, the meat and wet markets are both worth having a look around. Be sure to buy whole nutmeg, cinnamon and other spices to take home as gifts.
