TRAVEL FROM HOME • July 2020
California dreaming? From its spectacular beaches and wonderful wine country to its myriad multicultural infusions, there are plenty of reasons why we love The Golden State. With summer on our doorstep, the British Airways Avios eStore is brimming with buys that’ll bring a sunny slice of the West Coast to your home
Just north of the border, SoCal’s Mexican influence permeates everything from street names to local cuisine. It’s little surprise then that California consumes more tequila than any other US state. For a true taste, Olmeca Altos Plata Tequila (£29.90) available from The Bottle Club (5 Avios/£1) is crafted from agave from Los Altos, Jalisco, and is perfect for margarita making.
California’s year-round heat and laidback atmosphere lends itself to a bohemian aesthetic of pastel hues and earthy, lightweight fabrics. Whether you’re lucky enough to be lounging waterside over the next few months – or you’re looking for a picnic rug replacement – this simple, striped cotton towel (£12.50) from Habitat (1 Avios/£1) is a summer staple, while this outdoor rug from Urbanara (8 Avios/£1) will spruce up any patio decking.
Whether it’s the palm-lined promenades, glistening coastlines or the mountainous Sierra Nevada, Cali’s natural imagery is a jaw-dropper. Take a glimpse into some of the state’s most gorgeous scenes and brighten up your walls with one of these vintage tourist board prints of San Diego (£21.99), Yosemite National Park (£23.82) or coastal California (£42.99), available along with more West Coast-inspired wall art from Wayfair (6 Avios/£1).
Health is wealth in wellness-obsessed LA, and Angelenos take their juicing very seriously. To get your fix, the Hurom H100 cold press juicer (£399), available at Selfridges (up to 12 Avios/£1), squeezes down your fruit and veg into pure liquid goodness, and will even separate the pulp for you. Veritable’s Smart Garden indoor planter (£175) is another clever way to get your five-a-day, allowing you to grow-from-home everything from sweet basil to cherry tomatoes.
Known for its glorious hillside vineyards, Napa Valley produces some of USA’s – if not the world’s – most impressive vino. Luckily, it’s easy to get your hands on a bottle (or five), no matter where in the world you are. Among our favourites is this Rolling Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2016 (£14.99), available via The Wine Flyer, a refreshingly fruity drop that’s perfectly paired with seafood or cheese.
Bibliophiles who have spent the last few months expanding their collections can also venture across the pond through a number of Cali-chronicling reads. All available at Waterstones (1 Avios/£1), check out Francesca Lia Block’s coming-of-age Weetzie Bat (£10), a dreamy snapshot of mid-1970s Los Angeles, or John Muir’s The Mountains of California (£7.97), a love letter to the Californian wilderness. For art buffs, photographer Jimmy Marble’s Dream Baby Dream (£21.99) captures SoCal at its most vivid, including appearances from some of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
California’s talented locals can be found in every corner, but you don’t need to be on the ground to enjoy the fruits of their labour. Helene Henderson of beloved farm-to-table Malibu Farm Pier Café and Restaurant shares more than 100 recipes that champion fresh produce and Cali’s coastal cuisine in her book, Malibu Farm Cookbook (£30), also available at Waterstones (1 Avios/£1). Skip to the multigrain yogurt pancakes with crispy bacon bits and sliced fruit for sunshine on a plate.
