Too often overlooked in favour of its European and Australasian counterparts, the USA is a centre of diverse and innovative winemaking. From its punchy, fruit-packed Californian reds to the bone-dry Rieslings of Columbia Valley in Washington State, those unfamiliar with American wines will find a plethora of new favourites to discover...
A tasting trip through the Napa Valley might even be on your bucket list, but why not start now? Get a feel for America’s finest bottles with a selection from The Wine Flyer, collecting Avios with every purchase, then follow your favourites across the pond.
West Coast wines
Some of the country’s most innovative and established wineries are out west – in California and Washington State. California’s warm days, cool nights and reliably balmy climate make it a natural location for vintners. Its oldest vineyard estates date back to the 1850s. These days you can drive through the lauded Napa Valley, only an hour north by car from San Francisco, to sip creamy, complex Chardonnays and characterful Pinot Noirs among the vines. But you’ll also find estates as far south as San Luis Obispo and inland from coastal favourite Monterey.
Further up the coast are Washington State’s wineries, in a cooler Pacific Northwest climate that yields fruit bearing different flavours and textures. Fly into Seattle to venture out to dozens of picturesque wineries, typically producing fresh, mouthwatering Rieslings and rich, smoky reds made from Syrah and the more floral Merlot examples. While not yet as developed as California’s wine scene, the state’s offering is growing. Follow multi-stop tasting trails through the Walla Walla Valley and Yakima Valley, or simply jump on a rural tour heading out of Seattle.
