BA - The Club - Five nostalgic epic drives

Old Österreichring, Austria

This Austrian race track’s one of the most beautiful in the world and I’d love to drive it again. I’d have to do it properly though – racing Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton. Perhaps for comparison we could also compete at Monza in Milan, and Spa Francorchamps. They’re both incredibly high-speed tracks, which would make things fun.

Car of choice: We’d have to alternate between all three cars for comparison – Seb’s Ferrari, Lewis’s Mercedes and a Williams Renault

Fort William to St Albans, UK

This winding journey begins in the Scottish Highlands, and there are spectacular views as you descend from the hills and mountains. There are also lots of places to stop off along the way. The last time I drove it, seven years ago, I was in a motorhome with my wife. We’d pull over every now and then, have a cup of tea, and admire the views.

Car of choice: Open-top Ferrari

Mexico City, Mexico

Driving in Mexico City was the most amazing experience because of the sheer chaos. There is no test required to get a driving licence – I was surprised there weren’t more accidents. But drivers seem to muddle through and get the job done. It was an exhilarating experience to arrive at our destination in one piece.

Car of choice: I know it hasn't been invented yet, but a hovercar would be ideal. You could fly over any traffic gridlocks and land where you wanted.

Jersey, Channel Islands

I was born to be by the sea – I love the view, the sound and the way the waves break. I think that’s why I enjoy driving along the coast in Jersey so much: the sea is turquoise, and it’s truly majestic as the tide comes in on a beautiful sunny day. I like to take the dogs in the back of the car and head out for an afternoon drive.

UK motorways

As president of the Institute of Advanced Motorists, I’m a fan of UK roads. I particularly liked the old road off the M1 that went to Coventry. In the days before the new speed limits, it was a beautiful stretch where you could really put your foot down on. I love country roads, too. If you have time, exploring them is a wonderful way to spend a week.

Car of choice: My old F1 racing car, the FW11b, turbo-charged and wheel spinning in 6th gear at 180mph
