Advertorial: Six reasons to visit St. Kitts in 2016

While the thought of St. Kitts may conjure up images of beaches and turquoise lagoons, this beautiful Caribbean island is also bursting with exciting experiences to keep you entertained all year round

1. Get in to the swing
St. Kitts has a strong affinity with many different sports – whether you’re keen to practice your drive on the golf course, spend the day at the cricket ground or paddle board at the beach. Spectators should check out the St. Kitts Golf Open in May or book a ticket for the Tri-Nation Cricket Series in June. For water sports, head to Cockleshell Bay and try your hand at everything from surfing to wakeboarding.

2. A dip on the wild side
Open-water swimming is serious business in the Caribbean, with hoards of amphibious athletes donning their swimming caps and heading out in to the waves for the annual Nevis to St. Kitts Cross Channel Swim in March. The race takes place in the 2.5 mile stretch of crystal clear water between the two islands: keep an eye out for turtles as you go.

3. Don your dancing shoes
The carnival spirit is ever present on St. Kitts and it’s hard to escape the constant hum of laidback Caribbean rhythms. The 20th annual St. Kitts Music Festival takes place at the end of June, promising three days of music and dancing. Meanwhile, the Latin Fiestaheld in October, brings some of Latin music’s brightest stars to the island.

4. Chow down
Tuck into fresh fish while enjoying the sea views at one of St. Kitts’ beautiful beach shacks or restaurants. The lobster is as fresh as it gets at Sprat Net Bar & Grill. For something more formal, check out Marshall’s in Frigate Bay. The Seafood Coquille is a combination of conch, lobster and shrimp in a white wine sauce. Want to explore more of the region’s cuisine? Visit in July for St. Kitts Restaurant Week and experience the best food the island has to offer.

5. Get on track
Climb aboard the St. Kitts Scenic Railway and take a trip through the island’s rolling green hills. The train has two decks; an open topped observation deck and a parlour below, so you can sip rum punch whilst you trundle through the tropical terrain. Stop off at Brimstone Hill and explore the 300-year-old Fortress, or take a stroll around Fairview Great House and its botanical gardens.

6. Climb every mountain
If you can drag yourself away from the beach, head inland to Mount Liamuiga – an extinct volcano positioned at the green heart of the island. Standing proudly at nearly 4,000 feet, a climb isn’t for the faint hearted. But if you do brave the expedition, you can expect an abundance of tropical flora and fauna, and unforgettable views from the summit.
