The hottest West End stage opening of the season, School of Rock: The Musical puts a new spin on the much-loved 2003 film – plus there are songs you’ve never heard before and plot twists to boot. Here are five reasons to add it to your must-do London list

It’s an all-star production

It’s no secret that everything musical genius Andrew Lloyd Webber touches turns to gold – from The Phantom of the Opera to Cats, he’s arguably the godfather of London’s West End – and School of Rock is no exception. As if that weren’t enough, Julian Fellowes, creator of Downton Abbey, was also on board to write the book from which the show was adapted from, and legendary lyricist Glenn Slater earned another Tony nomination for his original score.

The head-banging kids

It’s every kid’s dream to have a cool supply teacher who does away with algebra and spelling tests, and puts guitar shredding and rock history firmly on the syllabus. But there’s no playing air guitars or lip-syncing here – all the kids in the cast play their own instruments live every night of the show, alongside sizzling choreography, dazzling light displays and songs that’ll have you dancing in the aisles. Rock on!

The brand new soundtrack

There’s a new slew of songs to sing and tap along to, scored by Andrew Lloyd Webber himself – so have your own air guitar at the ready. The musical only opened in November 2016, meaning you’ll be one of the first in line to hear what all the five-star reviews are raving about.

New characters – and plot twists

Think you know everything about School of Rock? Think again. The musical comedy has been given an update since the 2003 Richard Linklater film starring Jack Black, and the stage version features a new plot twist with romance blossoming between substitute teacher Dewey Finn and the school’s uptight headmistress.

Make a day of it in the West End

The show is playing at the New London Theatre, between Holborn and Leicester Square, so you can combine the School of Rock with a day trip that all the family will love in London. Be sure to book a lunch or dinner at one of Covent Garden’s buzzing restaurants – many offer pre- and post-theatre menus and deals.
