Limin’ in St Kitts: your how-to guide

Luckily, this Caribbean island is so good at unwinding that it’s become a national pastime – and we have the most chilled-out checklist of them all

When were you last limin’? If you don’t know, St Kitts – the chill capital of the Caribbean – is here to help. Put simply, limin’ means relaxing and enjoying good times with friends. As one local expert explains, “Limin’ is a state of mind.” Glorious nature, sparkling waves, laidback bars and spice-sizzling restaurants also contribute. In the West Indies, your reasons for limin’ outnumber the grains of sand on your nearest beach. Here are five, for starters (and don’t forget twice-weekly direct flights from London Gatwick to St Kitts, too).

Limin’ with a side of… history

Limin’ with a side of… history

Unless you’re a Caribbean seabird, your best bet for coastline views from St Kitts is Brimstone Hill Fortress & National Park. Perched 800ft above sea level, the earliest parts of this UNESCO-listed limestone fortress date back to 1690. It’s easy to imagine the British colonialists scanning the horizon for signs of French attack. These days, you can focus on the shimmering sea and rolling terrain, instead. The scenic drive up to this hilltop citadel is an adventure in itself. Look out for white-fringed, black-faced vervet monkeys darting amid the lush greenery.

Commutes don’t get much sweeter than the St Kitts Scenic Railway, which was carved into the landscape between 1912 and 1926. Originally shuttling sugar cane from island plantations to the sugar factory in the capital, Basseterre, the railway now provides a dazzling three-hour tour. You’ll traverse a 30-mile circular route, encompassing 18 miles by narrow gauge train and 12 miles on sightseeing buses. Natural eye candy on the ‘Last Railway in the West Indies’ comes in the form of delicious emerald and azure views.

Limin’ with a side of… Caribbean cuisine

Discover the natural bounty of St Kitts, bite by bite. The island’s culinary scene spans everything from fine dining in elegant resorts to laidback beach bars and farm-to-table feasts, all bursting with flavour and flair. At Park Hyatt St Kitts, enjoy all-day dining at the architecturally impressive Great House, plus seafood so fresh it almost wriggles at the Fisherman’s Village. Sunset Reef’s restaurant serves seasonal cuisine starring home-grown produce. More farm-to-table delights can be found at Ital Creations and Liamuiga Natural Farm. Last but not least, savour seafood, ribs and Johnny cakes (fried dumplings) at low-key Sprat Net Bar & Grill.

Limin’ with a side of… rum

You knew this was coming, didn’t you? Blasphemous as it is to visit St Kitts and not try the local spirit, we recommend rum cocktails at the Strip’s constellation of beach bars and at Shipwreck on South Friars Bay. But why stop there? Continue your liquid education and become a bona fide rum expert on a three-hour guided RumMaster tour. You’ll discover the history of Old Road Rum at the Caribbean’s oldest rum distillery, before crafting spiced rum with help from Hibiscus Spirits at Spice Mill. Expect plenty of tots to refresh you.

Limin’ with a side of… “somewhere to be”

Limin’ and music go together like lobster and garlic. Luckily, St Kitts has a bursting calendar of island happenings, including festivals, sports and entertainment for every taste. Soak up the diverse sounds of the Caribbean at the annual Music Festival, from 27-29 June. Budding mermaids/mermen can carve up the waves on 6 April at the Nevis to St Kitts Cross Channel Swim, while landlubbers cheer on participants. Gourmands will enjoy St Kitts & Nevis Restaurant Week in July. August highlights include Nevis Culturama Festival and, for cricket-lovers, the Caribbean Premier League (23-27 August 2024), with six teams from six islands battling it out for victory at Basseterre’s Warner Park.
