Boston: six reasons to stay

It may be one of the oldest cities in the US, but don’t let Boston’s history fool you – it’s a youthful place with a vibrant food-and-nightlife scene. Boston blogger Kate Bowler takes The Club on a tour of the must-see spots in this smart New England city

Modern plates

The ‘it’ spot to eat for Bostonians is Alden & Harlow (above) – a modern, open-kitchen restaurant in the Harvard Square neighbourhood of Cambridge. It has racked up a list of accolades, but still maintains a humble, food-first, welcoming vibe. Arrive early to order the Secret Burger, made in limited quantities – they sell out every night. If you’re too late, the pickled Verrill Farm corn pancakes are unmissable.

Live tunes

You can hear live music every day at The Beehive in the South End – a local mainstay for drinks and entertainment. The spot is known for its weekend jazz performances over brunch and the laid-back, bohemian decor and ambience.

Shop local

Newbury Street is world-famous for shopping, but to hit the spots the locals frequent travel down to the South End neighbourhood. A burgeoning area for shopkeeper-owned and operated spots, you’ll find unique gifts at stores like Olives & Grace (above) and Farm & Fable, smart menswear at Sault New England, and rugged Boston style at vintage decor shop Pioneer Goods

Off the beaten track

Instead of getting lost in a sea of tourists downtown, take a spin around hip Union Square in Somerville. This up-and-coming district is fertile ground for new restaurants and shops. Have the hearty wurst plate at Bronwyn, hit the shuffleboard table at Brass Union and indulge in craft cocktails at hidden gem Backbar (pictured). For dessert, try the Fluff ice cream at Gracie’s Ice Cream (the kitschy marshmallow treat was invented in Somerville). Union Square is also birthplace of the city-wide gourmet donut craze: Union Square Donuts.

Drink up

Boston has become a hub for breweries and master mixologists. Visit these spots for both the drinks and the experience: Harpoon Brewery Beer Hall for communal tables full of brews and homemade pretzels; or head underground to craft-cocktail bar Drink for a masterfully, handmade libation by some of the country’s best bartenders.

Green spaces

Boston has its cold winters, but the city comes alive once the snow thaws. Visit the famous parks to enjoy views of the skyline, such as the Boston Public Gardens, or take a look at some of the newer parks like Lawn on D (pictured above), an interactive outdoor space that boasts lawn games, food trucks, rotating art installations and live performances.
