WORK TODAY, FLY TOMORROW • May 2016
Whether you’re strolling through the city’s newest park or moseying down to the Cowgirl Hall of Fame, Dallas – the fun Texan metropolis – has plenty to offer. British Airways’ local expert Wendy Epperson tells The Club how she likes to spend time when off duty in her hometown
The Meddlesome Moth (pictured) has a great atmosphere and a menu full of surprises: the food is incredible. If you’re with a group, order a sharing dish and try the papaya guacamole and forest mushroom farro. Also check out Local Urban Craft Kitchen. It’s in the up-and-coming Trinity Groves area and always has a good vibe. I love the calabacitas starter, made with squash, onions and peppers.
Hang out with locals at Klyde Warren Park. It’s in the middle of Downtown and is Dallas’s newest park. Food trucks pull up every day with everything from slices of pizza at Yummy Pizza to lobster rolls at Cousins Maine Lobster. There’s always something going on here and it’s near all the city-centre venues. You can join in with open-air yoga or take the kids to see a music-and-story show.
Visit Akola and buy an unusual bracelet or cool handbag. The shop is non-profit and helps to employ the women of Uganda and Dallas. Lower Greenville is another happening area. Treat yourself to yerba mate truffles at Dude, Sweet Chocolate (above) or try the poutine (french fries and cheese curds topped with a light gravy) at The Blind Butcher.

Deep Ellum is an eclectic, bohemian neighbourhood just to the east of Downtown. There are great shops and legendary nightlife. Dallas Design District is a bit more refined, but the hot place to be as it’s new and flashy. There’s also a great brewery called Noble Rey Brewing Co. The beers have names like Bridesmaid’s Tears and Little Man’s Complex.
Head west to Fort Worth and visit the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame (pictured). They have interesting events and speakers, and plenty of artefacts from the Old West. Whenever I have guests who are new to Dallas, they always want to visit The Sixth Floor Museum, which presents the life, death and legacy of President John F. Kennedy. Afterwards, I take them shopping at the Neiman Marcus flagship store.
