Where am I? Oregon’s largest city is famous for its quirkiness. Its name was decided upon the toss of a coin by its founders and many of its street names and landmarks have been immortalised in The Simpsons, whose creator was born here. As well as having more microbreweries and vegan eateries than any other US city, its outdoor possibilities are endless, especially in the springtime – from snowboarding on Mount Hood to surfing in Bridgewater Bay. Oh, and its airport is ranked the best in the United States.

Where am I? The ‘big easy’ birthplace of jazz, poker, dental floss, Louis Armstrong and Ellen DeGeneres, this city on the Mississippi is famous for its pioneering music scene and Mardi Gras carnival. It’s also the home of voodoo and is apparently the most haunted city in the USA. Nor are food portions for the fainthearted: gorge on Cajun and Creole cuisine and local specialities, po’boys and beignets. The city motto is ‘Laissez les bon temps rouler’ (‘Let the good times roll’). It’s not hard to see why.

Where am I? Known as ‘Hollywood North’ for the number of film and TV productions made here, this Canadian seaport is where Greenpeace was founded and Botox invented. Ranked third in the world as the best city to live in for quality of life, with great skiing in the winter and swimming (with beluga whales) in the summer, its Stanley Park is even bigger than New York City’s Central Park. And its airport is famous for its spectacular waterfall and extensive collection of First Nation art.

Where am I? This South American capital lies 500-650 metres above sea level, and you can see the snow-topped Andes from most points in the city. Among other landmarks, a giant statue of the Virgin Mary sits high on a hilltop in Cerro San Cristóbal and, by contrast, the sleek 21st-century Gran Torre towers over the financial district. Founded by a Spanish conquistador in 1541, the city’s rich culture and heritage is reflected in everything from the Pablo Neruda museum to the Lollapalooza festival… and a clown cemetery.

Where am I? The only country in the world to be named after a woman, this English-speaking sovereign island in the eastern Caribbean Sea has an interior dominated by lush tropical rainforests and high peaks – most notably the two Pitons. Natural attractions include the ‘world’s only drive-in volcano’, a spectacular multicoloured waterfall and 158 kilometres of sandy coastline full of scuba-diving hotspots. A cultural highlight is the annual jazz festival, attended by musicians from across the world.

Where am I? One of the oldest cities in Britain, this vast urban centre is surrounded by the Cairngorms National Park (which eclipses the Lake District for size). Also known as the Granite City – its local stone was used to build the Houses of Parliament and Trafalgar Square – it’s home to a 14th-century bridge, a record number of whisky distilleries, and the biggest man-made hole in Europe (a former quarry). Notably, it also gave birth to Annie Lennox, Emeli Sandé and the first football dugout.

Where am I? The most populous city in this West African country – and one of the fastest growing in the world – was the capital until 1992 and is both its economic engine and the centre of a thriving Nollywood film industry. Increasingly known for its beach resorts, nightlife and shopping, it is a melting pot of cultures, with a growing arts scene – many of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novels are set here. It also boasts the longest bridge on the continent and a neighbouring ‘floating city’ built over the water on stilts.

Where am I? This remote archipelago in the Indian Ocean was once a pirate hideout and is today a hugely popular luxury tourist destination. Consisting of 73 coral islands and 42 inner islands, it’s famous for its native flora and fauna, being home to Esmeralda, the heaviest land tortoise in the wild, the rare bare-legged scops owl and the coco de mer, which produces the largest seed in the world. Its capital, Victoria, is so small it can be explored on foot in less than a day.
