Among the newly renovated facilities at the Grand Palladium Sicilia Resort & Spa, you’ll find four pools. Our favourite is the coolly mood-lit Sicilia Pool, ringed by feathery palms and shaded loungers: perfect for sunny swims. Or, if you don’t want to go those extra few steps to the beach, sunbathe just metres away at the Beach Pool – you’ll hear the waves and get the full benefit of the sea air without worrying about seaweed or sneaky sea creatures. Come siesta-time, seek shade at the indoor spa pool or at the garden pool, which sits beneath a pretty copse of palm trees.

Families will love the dedicated playrooms, tennis courts and full programme of activities for all ages. Drop little ones off for up to 130 minutes of babysitting at the Baby Club. Teens, meanwhile, can indulge in adult-free fun at the Junior’s Club, which features a selection of videogames and music.

There’s a contemporary take on coastal design here: think wicker accents, creamy tones and wall-to-wall windows. All rooms – from Deluxe to the Presidential Suite – come with a king-sized bed or twin beds, a 55-inch flatscreen TV and furnished outdoor terrace. Upgrade for even more perks: rooms near or looking on to the Tyrrhenian sea have extra space for the kids, plus larger terraces with loungers (or even a dining table, if you’re entertaining Italian-style). If you can spare a day away from the resort, travel just 15 minutes east to mediaeval Cefalù. This red-roofed town edges a glorious golden beach beneath the 880ft La Rocca mountain, which is worth a wander for spectacular views over the bay. Marvel at the mosaic of Christ Pantocrator at the 12th-century cathedral, and sample fresh seafood from one of the many restaurants lining the cobbled streets. You can also head to the 16th-century wash house, or lavatorio (used until relatively recently), and view the contemporary art now lining its walls. Just south of Cefalù, you’ll find the undulating green hills, villages and castles of Madonie National Park. Belissimo.
