BA news • October 2013
British Airways has recently taken delivery of its first Airbus A380, the world's largest passenger airliner. One of the people responsible for designing the new aircraft's interior, BA's Kathryn Doyle, gives us the insider's guide to the new giant of the skies.
What's the big deal with this new plane?
Just that - it's very big. The new super-jumbo, the first of 12
that BA has ordered, will carry 469 customers in new levels of
comfort across two decks.
Where will it fly to?
Los Angeles rolled out the red carpet for BA's
inaugural A380 service from Heathrow in September. It will also
start flying to Hong Kong in late October, and Johannesburg in February.
It's more seats on a plane, so what?
Stretched out across two decks, the seats are based on the
configuration and decor on BA's new Boeing 777-300s that have
proved very popular with customers. Plus there are improvements to
the on board service, the in-flight entertainment and the
air-conditioning system, so passengers arrive at their destination
feeling refreshed and ready to go. The A380 is also a greener
machine. It uses less fuel and is significantly quieter than older
aircraft.
Tell us about the interiors
The Club World cabins keep the successful yin-yang design, but
with a slightly refreshed, darker look. The downstairs cabin offers
the lauded 2-4-2 layout with a pair of adjacent forward-facing
seats. There's more space in First, with each of the 14 seats
getting their own wardrobe, each capable of taking a standard
wheelie bag and more room to stretch out to enjoy the incomparable
service.
What if I'm travelling alone?
If you're in Club World, the triple seat in the 2-3-2
layout means there is a central seat which offers seclusion. It
gives the cabin a whole new dynamic. If you're travelling alone or
in need of sleep, you can put both screens up and lock yourself
away. It's very private, but spacious.
I imagine the economy cabins look as vast as a
cathedral...
Far from it. Set aside images of serried rows of seats stretching
as far as the eye can see, there's a much more intimate feeling on
board. Upstairs, the World Traveller seats are in a 2-4-2 layout,
and the rear cabin has an exclusive feel with just 32 seats.
So what's in it for me?
As an Executive Club Member you can get the star treatment on the
red carpet route and earn and spend Avios on flights to and from
Los Angeles, and in the coming months, Hong Kong and Johannesburg
too.
