If you like street food, you’ll love Kuala Lumpur’s hawkers stalls along Jalan Alor. The local dishes to try are kway teow (spicy fried rice noodles), fried hokkien mee (a KL specialty of noodles in dark soy sauce) and crabs in a variety of flavours from chilli and black pepper to sweet and sour.
Frequency: 24 times a week
Best for: cosy winter fun
Risto Sjoholm, customer service manager, Nordic countries
I discovered a great place for glögg (Nordic mulled wine) last year called Mårten Trotzig. It’s situated in Old Town’s narrowest alley, and the candlelit bar is cosy and atmospheric. Make sure you get a sneak peak at its impressive 17th-century wine cellar while you’re there.
Launch: 1 December
Best for: Michelin in the mountains
Pascal Pabon, airport manager, Grenoble
Perched at 1,650m in the Isère of the French Alps, the views from the Michelin-starred Le P’tit Polyte (within the Hotel Chalet Mounier) are just as impressive as the creative dishes on its seasonal menu (think gingerbread-encrusted scallops and cactus flower sorbet). It’s the perfect spot for a long, lazy lunch.
Frequency: 34 times a week
Best for: Christmas markets
Michael Bader, ground handling agent, Vienna
The best market is the one in front of Schönbrunn Castle. The backdrop is wonderful, especially if there is a dusting of snow on the ground, and you can buy handmade art as well as a warm glühwein (mulled wine) and other culinary delights. The market in Spittelberg is also atmospheric, as it’s set amongst the old, narrow labyrinthian streets of the seventh district.
Launch: 14 December
Best for: snow for non-skiers
Nick Barlin, customer service manager, Germany
There are hundreds of ski resorts that you can access from Friedrichshafen, but if you’re still after a snow-filled adrenalin rush without strapping into a pair of skis, head to Ischgl: activities include ice skating, horse-drawn sleigh rides and a five-mile floodlit toboggan run.
