My Club: the celebrity dentist

Appearing at conferences and television shows around the world is all in a day’s work for dentist to the stars Miguel Stanley. He tells The Club about his travel highlights, from skiing in Iran to eating with locals on holiday

Could you describe your travel life?
As a dental surgeon specialising in complex cosmetic rehabilitation, I’m invited to lecture around the world. I’ve already been to 14 destinations this year, including Dallas, Marrakech, Moscow and Ukraine. I always stay an extra day or two in a city. I like the Anthony Bourdain approach – culture is explored through food. I have a meal at someone’s home, try the street food and go to a restaurant. People are proud of their heritage through food; it’s a great way to get to know a place fast.

What are your three travel essentials?
Bose noise-cancelling headphones. British Airways has amazing ones in Club World cabins, but I take my own for the airport. Second, a good book. As a frequent traveller, I’ve usually watched many of the onboard films already. Last but not least, flip-flops for the hotel.

Who would be your dream travel companion?
Roger Waters, one of the founders of Pink Floyd – the group were the soundtrack of my teens. His lyrics are so profound that I’d like to sit and ask him about the meaning behind his songs.

Where is home?
Lisbon
, Portugal. The first thing you should do when you get off the plane is catch tram 28 from the Basilica of Estrela – it will take you in a circle for about one hour around the old part of the city. It’s a beautiful ride and a great introduction to Lisbon.

Which destination has surprised you?
I went skiing in Dizin, a mountain north of Tehran and had a blast. I loved the food and the people. I’m expecting great things from Iran – it’s a really cool place to go, and very safe.

How do you spend your Avios?
I use them for upgrades on my personal holidays. Mind you, short-haul flights in Euro Traveller are also phenomenal – the staff are so friendly.
