An expert’s guide to... • September 2014
With Fashion Week sweeping the capital from 12-16 September, fashion writer Lizzy Wilkinson shares her expert tips on seeing through the week in style, from where to catch new talent to tracking down this season’s essential accessories
Heading to a show or 10 this season? Then you’ll be needing AW14’s signature cover-up to look the part. Making waves on the runways of Burberry (pictured), Chanel and Valentino, it’s safe to say that the blanket is officially the new coat. It’s sumptuous, luxurious and totally wearable, and Burberry will even emblazon it with your initials, should you so desire.
Twice a year, Fashion East, headed up by the inimitable Lulu Kennedy, showcases a fresh new line-up of talent. This designer support scheme has launched the careers of Jonathan Saunders, Richard Nicoll and Roksanda Ilincic, so the show is certainly not one to be missed. For SS15, Ed Marler, Helen Lawrence and Louise Alsop will take to the stage. Expect vibrant prints, knitted knickers and serious East London vibes.
Even hardcore fashion girls can have a little fun sometimes. And if last season was anything to go by, we’re going to be seeing a lot of cartoon styling on London’s streets this year. Opt for Moschino’s fast-food quilted bag in bold shades of red and yellow (à la McDonald’s) to make a real style statement – and don’t forget to pack your matching iPhone case.
Not only is Abimarvel one of the top tweeters to follow for all the latest Fashion Week gossip, she’s also the bright-minded individual behind The Apartment (pictured), a creative haven in Covent Garden where the world’s top fashion bloggers can relax and recharge between shows. If fun and outrageous style is at the forefront of your agenda, head here to see the latest trends in action.
Forget Chiltern Firehouse, thanks to the ME’s proximity to Somerset House (LFW’s thriving HQ) and the roof-terrace bar’s panoramic views of the city skyline, it has quickly become the only place to see and be seen after a gruelling day of shows. Just remember to keep your eyes peeled while you sip that martini.
Nestled in the heart of London’s finest district, The May Fair Hotel (see offer below) will once again become a hotbed of well-heeled activity during LFW. Previous seasons have seen the hotel collaborate with designers such as Sophia Webster to create impressive window displays and delicious cocktails. This year, take a seat alongside the fashion elite at the newly rechristened May Fair Kitchen (pictured) for a five-star dining experience that is sure to keep you coming back for more. Expect fresh Scottish langoustines and 28-day-aged steaks on the menu.
