My Club: Ellie Simmonds

Paralympian and Gold Executive Club Member Ellie Simmonds OBE is a four-time Paralympic champion and holds numerous world records. She took time out of her training schedule to tell us about discovering new places and preparing for Rio 2016

What do you enjoy doing on holiday?
I love exploring. I recently went to Barcelona for a short break and couldn’t wait to see the amazing architecture and experience the city. When you’re in a different country you need to discover the hidden treasures. That said, sometimes I just need to crash out on a beach.

Do you have a favourite Olympic venue?
London
2012 was incredible and whenever I’m at the Olympic Park the memories and emotions come rushing back. To compete in a home Games on behalf of my country was a dream come true. My first Paralympic Games was in Beijing, and as a 13-year-old with no expectations, winning two gold medals was more than I could have imagined in my wildest dreams. Their aquatic centre, Water Cube, is one of my favourite venues.

Which is the most spectacular pool you’ve swum in?
I went on holiday to Santorini in Greece last year and the pools overlooking the sea were amazing. It’s such a beautiful place.

What kind of traveller are you?
Quite easy-going, although I panic if I think I’ll be late for anything. I have to be in my seat nice and early. When I’m at my destination I like to wander around and do what the locals do without using public transport. I try to avoid tourist spots.

What are your travel essentials?
If I’m going to a training camp or a competition I always pack a costume, hat and goggles in my hand luggage so that even if I lose my suitcase I can still swim. And I love listening to music. In the call room, before I go out to race, I always have my headphones on, listening to something to psyche me up. Eminem’s Lose Yourself is particularly good.

Do you use the BA airport lounges?
I’ve been lucky enough to use various BA lounges and they’re all fantastic. They really help you relax, especially before a long flight, because you can get away from the hustle and bustle. And what’s better than a bit of food and relaxation before you fly?

What do you think about when you think of BA?
I actually think of the journey back from Beijing to London, when we were on a BA plane with a gold nose cone as a celebration of our success at the Games. The airline also played a huge part in London 2012.
