A719 from Ayr to Culzean Castle, Scotland

I’m biased because I did this journey every week at home as a child. Now, whenever I show guests around Scotland, I always take them on this road. It hugs the coastline and on a clear day you have incredible views, which can reach all the way to Northern Ireland. The most impressive parts are spotting the Volcanic Ailsa Craig, and The Electric Brae - a gravity hill where a stationary car with the brakes off will appear to move slowly uphill. The view then opens up to the wonderful Robert Adam clifftop castle.

B8 from Phini (Fioni) to Troodos Mountains, Cyprus

The whole road from Cyprus’s coast to the Troodos Mountains is just incredible. One of my favourite stretches is from Phini up to the highest point on the island. The Phini Tavern is the perfect place to break up the drive, with wonderful fresh food and a gorgeous terrace to sit on. The further inland and higher you drive, the more you'll smell the scent of fresh pine and feel that cool breeze - a welcome relief in the summer.

M6098 from Nice to Monaco, Côte D’Azur, France

This coastal road shows off the rugged clifftops of the Côte d’Azur. Like so many roads it is probably best to be a passenger so you can look at the spectacular views along the coast to Monaco and out to sea. Stop at Èze and Beaulieu-Sur-Mer before parking at Le Cabanon restaurant for a tranquil lunch or dinner on a dazzling clifftop peninsula.

Routes 1 & 19 from Baja California to Todos Santos, Mexico

At first you’ll think this is a normal Mexican highway with big open lanes. The further you drive, the more rustic things become. On one side is the ocean, on the other cactus and sand. When you reach Todos Santos, this little village will welcome you with friendly people and great food. Find some of the unmarked dust tracks that lead to deserted, serene beaches.

Car of choice: Any 4x4 for beach tracks

A592, Kirkstone Pass, Lake District, UK

Do the whole road from Patterdale to Troutbeck and on to Windermere in the glorious Lake District. The roads that lead to the pass are beautiful, but the A592 is an altogether different level. With an altitude of 1,489 feet, Kirkstone Pass is the Lake District’s highest pass open to traffic. There’s an inn and a car park at the top, where you’ll want to spend some time enjoying the spectacular views.
