Spend now, fly later with American Express

If your bucket list is laden with far-flung holidays and hotels, it’s time to find a credit card that will help tick off those travel ambitions. The British Airways American Express® Credit Card lets you collect Avios and earn a British Airways American Express Companion Voucher, so you can bring a loved one along for the ride

Holidays on the horizon
No credit card on the market combines the necessity of spending and the joys of travel quite like the British Airways American Express Credit Card (Representative 22.2% APR variable), where every purchase gets you that little bit closer to your dream destination. How? From the Avios that you’ll collect for every pound spent on purchases (1 Avios; £1) – just one benefit in a world of perks for travel-happy Cardmembers.

Simple spends, big rewards
So, let’s say Jane and John Doe spend £600 a month on their credit card. By the end of the year, that’s a total of £7,200. By making these purchases on a British Airways American Express Credit Card, the Doe’s will receive 7,200 Avios a year simply for their standard monthly spend.

But what else will Cardmembers receive for keeping their British Airways American Express Credit Card front of wallet?

The core benefit
The British Airways Companion Voucher has been called “possibly the most valuable UK credit card benefit out there” by The Points Guy, and it’s easy to see why. The voucher is sent to eligible British Airways American Express Credit Cardmembers who spend £20,000 in one full year of their Cardmembership. You can take a companion with you in the same flight and cabin when you redeem Avios for a British Airways Reward Flight (flights booked purely with Avios) and you’ll only need to pay for the taxes, fees and carrier charges that apply per person.

So, once you’ve got your Companion Voucher, what do you do with it? You only get a set amount of time (12 months) to book the Reward Flight in question, which means you should put on your thinking cap ahead of time. Always wanted to walk amongst the cherry blossom in Osaka? Or across San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge (pictured below)? Maybe you fancy a quick hop to eat pizza in Rome, peruse the promenade in Nice, or curl up on a beach in Crete?

“Last year I used my Companion Voucher and Avios to book a return trip of a lifetime to Singapore in Club World. I took my boyfriend with me – lucky guy! – and we split the carrier fees. My top tip: put all big bills and home improvements on your Card.”

Katherine Knight, Cardmember

Whichever destination you choose, you can take a lucky plus one with you, in the same cabin type, with only the carrier charges left to pay.

Once everyday purchases, everyday bills and big-budget necessities get involved, you might end up hitting that threshold sooner than you think. You can also add an Additional Card to your Account for your family members or partners. That way you can build up Avios at twice the speed.

Shop and collect
Wondering how you can possibly hit the Companion Voucher threshold from the great indoors? More than a third (37 per cent) of Brits took to the internet to shop during lockdown than before the Covid-19 crisis, according to research from money.co.uk. But only the savvy travellers amongst them shopped via the British Airways Avios eStore. BA’s shopping platform offers Avios on purchases at thousands of beloved brands, so you can put money on your Card and collect Avios from your sofa.

“The Avios eStore is my first port of call before buying anything, be it a paddling pool or hotel stay – our last hotel booking got us 8,000 Avios!”

Talia Harvey, Cardmember

Did you know?
Cardmembers who use their British Airways American Express Credit Card and British Airways’ shopping portal in conjunction with each other will collect double the Avios, something also known as ‘double-dipping’.

To put that into practice, ordering this sofa bed (£499) from Made (4 Avios per £1) via the British Airways Avios eStore will see 1,996 Avios deposited into your Executive Club account. Make that same purchase on your British Airways American Express Credit Card, and the Avios goes up to 2,495. No extra effort required. Oh, and if you’ve never used the eStore before, you can get 20 per cent bonus Avios points on your first transaction.
