Sleep chic: seven pyjama sets for 35,000 feet

Jaunty jetsetters are increasingly wearing sleepwear as daywear to travel in supreme and snugglesome style. Here are a few thoughts on how to pull off the art of the presentable pyjama…

When it comes to travel clothes, comfort has always been king – especially if you’re getting on a long-haul flight. Perhaps it’s not surprising, then, that the latest fashion trend has seen none other than humble PJs take centre stage. Blending practicality with just enough polish to be presentable, pyjamas as outerwear are perfect for the airport and a go-to if you want to smooth over any travel wardrobe stresses.

After all, while some folks get dressed up for their flights, business travel certainly doesn’t require you to wear a suit. In fact, there’s been a whole new movement of people wearing pyjamas at the airport. Angelina Jolie, Post Malone, Erling Haaland, Sophie Turner and Selena Gomez are just some of the famous faces most recently spotted catching their flights in feelgood silk, satin and pure cotton numbers. And we’re not talking winceyette nighties. Brands across the board, from Celine and Dolce & Gabbana to Tekla and The Frankie Shop, now do PJ sets that are designed for daytime wear. All of which will make take off and travel that little bit dreamier...

Tekla poplin shortie set

Copenhagen-based label Tekla specialises in really nice bedlinen, but it also does some of the best night-to-day pyjamas out there. Paired with white laidback Birkenstocks and chunky socks, this striped poplin two-piece (£155) is designed for ease of movement throughout the day.

Celine pyjamas

After pyjamas with a Gallic flair? Celine’s your answer. Crafted from pure silk, these striped PJs (£1,350) are the sort that deserve to be flaunted in front of the hundreds of gazing eyes at the airport. They’ll make that long-haul flight more enjoyable, too, thanks to their super soft construction and unrivalled breathability.

Piglet in Bed short set

Made from a blend of European linen and natural TENCEL™ fibres, Piglet in Bed’s short set (£65) is comfort-first daywear. Factor in its thermoregulating and antibacterial properties, and this is attire that’s sure to enhance your travel wardrobe.

Victoria Beckham monogram sleep set

No stranger to wearing pyjamas out and about, the undisputed queen of high-flying fashion sells her own monogrammed sleep sets (£350) that could double down as daywear. Ideal for rolling out of bed and boarding that flight, these are loose and free, meaning 100% comfort. If Victoria Beckham’s doing it, we all can, right?

Toast daywear lounge set

With a slightly thicker cut, Toast’s daywear lounge shorts and smock (£115 and £125) are for people who aren’t ready to go full satin at the airport. A perfect halfway house between business casual and beach bar chic, the wider, oversized silhouette in the legs and arms provides a softly structured style, while the organic cotton construction means they’ll help contribute to a restful flight and breezy airport transfer.

Dolce & Gabbana silk pyjama pants

Big, bold and summery, Dolce & Gabbana’s silk pyjama pants (£1,200), which are designed for everyday wear as opposed to sleep, aren’t the sort you change into in the loo once you’ve taken off. They’re to be seen, so wear them proudly through the airport, and then kick back and snooze in them, too.

Paul Smith pyjama set

In the grand scheme of things, there’s really no difference between a short-sleeve pyjama set and the daytime two-pieces that are currently trending in menswear. Paul Smith’s outfit (£175) is light and airy, comes covered in a chic stripe and will look just like those daytime sets when teamed up with a pair of sneakers and sunglasses.
