Shangri-La at the Shard

Occupying levels 34 to 52 of Western Europe’s tallest building, the Shangri-La’s guestrooms and suites all have floor-to-ceiling windows so that you can enjoy the uninterrupted views of the entire city.
Know this… Splashing out? Book the 39th-floor suite, which opens in September: it will offer a 180-degree view stretching from the Palace of Westminster to Canary Wharf.

ME London

The BBC’s transmission aerials that once topped this hotel inspired the name for its rooftop bar, Radio. The south-facing terrace offers a spectacular panorama from St Paul’s to the London Eye, but the lofty overview of Somerset House is really unique.
Know this… Enjoy the view with a Flower in the Rain cocktail – inspired by The Move’s song of the same name that first played on BBC Radio 1 from the building in 1967.

InterContinental Park Lane

This Piccadilly hotel sits on the site of Queen Elizabeth II’s childhood home, and its eighth-floor Royal Suite has a panoramic view fit for royalty. The most atmospheric spot to soak it up is the study, where a traditional writing desk overlooks Hyde Park and Knightsbridge.
Know this… Travelling en masse? The “By Appointment” collection lets guests customise their suite by adding up to five connecting rooms to the base. Top off the mix with the hotel’s duplex London Suite and you’ve got over 3,750sq ft.

DoubleTree by Hilton, Tower of London

It’s best to visit SkyLounge, the 12th-floor roof bar of the snazzy new Hilton, on a Sunday to avoid the suited City crowds. The view from the south terrace captures the best of old and new London, with the 19th-century Tower Bridge and shiny new Shard in sight.
Know this… From May to September, Cuervo’s Cantina takes over one side of the terrace with a dedicated bar serving Jose Cuervo cocktails (think classic frozen margaritas and Mexican mules).

Corinthia Hotel

With an enviable position between the Thames, Trafalgar Square and Whitehall, it’s not hard to get a knockout view from this grande dame hotel, especially from one of its seven super Penthouse Suites. The 5,000sq ft Royal Penthouse has a sweeping view from Westminster to the Gherkin.
Know this… Book The Hamilton Penthouse, named after Lord Nelson’s mistress Emma, Lady Hamilton. It has a private hot tub on its terrace that befittingly looks straight out to Nelson’s Column.

Four Seasons Park Lane

Get a more spiritual high at the Four Seasons, where the tenth-floor rooftop is occupied by a serene spa. Enjoy a sauna session or treatments while you admire the impressive vista, which stretches from Hyde Park to the London Eye. But don’t worry – at this height, you can see out, but no one can see in.
Know this… All of the spa suites have floor-to-ceiling windows, but some of the best views are from the couples’ Sky Suite.

Park Plaza Westminster Bridge

As one of the tallest buildings in the area, with an exterior fashioned almost entirely from glass, The Park Plaza Westminster Bridge boasts views of almost all of London’s famous sights from its rooms. What’s more, you can get up close to most of them (Big Ben, the London Eye) in minutes.
Know this… Book the Penthouse 1408 to enjoy the ultimate view from the comfort of a huge private terrace.
